Hi!
I've recently picked up my dream car - a 54 beetle.
I've never restored a car but I plan on doing a full pan off resto back to original.
I am in the early stages but am trying to devise a plan of where to begin.
My first question - the best, easiest way to remove the old paint? I know sand blasting of the doors and panels is a bad idea because if warping. Is there a chemical way of stripping the paint from home? As I do not believe there is a place that offers a 'dipping' service near me.
I have a couple spots that need new metal grafted in; I'd like to get this body off and prepped this winter, so I'm trying to figure out how ASAP
Thanks

Aircraft paint stripper from NAPA is about $50/gallon, but its industrial strength & works great
Jasco paint stripper from Home Depot is about $25/gallon, and works as well _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

Thanks.
I was hoping there was a more 'quick' solution - has anyone had success having their stuff soda blasted?
I'm particularly curious how to get the paint completely stripped out of the rear vent, engine bay and interior. _________________ Charmaine

You might look into walnut shell, plastic media or soda blasters near you. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty (wearing gloves of course) using the above mentioned paint stripper is a good, affordable way to go. I like to use paint stripper to remove most of the paint and use a propane torch to remove bondo and under coating. I save the nooks, crannies and hard to reach areas for the blaster. |

As mentioned above, yes! The paint stripper is kinda messy though, and DO NOT get any of it on your skin!!!! Oh, and another warning . . . DO NOT get any of it on your skin!!!!!

Personally, I had one car "dipped" and would not do that again . . .
I think Loren is on the right track!
I used a heat gun instead of the torch for removing Bondo.
Welcome to The Samba and all the best on your project! _________________ Jesucristo es mi Señor y Salvador! |

Thanks!
I just started a build thread so you can get to know me
I'll be on a lot with questions!
First on the list - getting the car apart and pan stripped. _________________ Charmaine

You could get the guards and dash grills dipped. If this stripper is water based a stainless steel scrouer and a bucket of water worked well,por15 stripper is water based, give paint a rough up before stripper.por15 metal ready then etch prime |

Negotiate the price!! I talked him down $250. Your 54 looks fairly dry and would be worth it ...money talks, especially if you pay cash. _________________ 2013 Jetta

Ive been stripping my 10 layers of paint primer and filler with angle grinder, with wire wheels and stripper discs.. takes a while and messy. I might buy my own small portable blaster to get the hard to reach places
Paying someone to do it just costs so much money, bad enough early oval/splits are already expensive to build _________________ Gotta give my props to:

Well hopefully I don't cry when I get the quote for some of these things.
I have to get the bolts undone and disassemble the car before the pan can go to the blasters... I was hoping in the next couple weeks. I fear what powder coating it is gonna cost! _________________ Charmaine

I've had cars walnut and soda blasted and the results were great. None of the mess at you house. It all comes down to the money factor. If you have the extra funds then pay to have it blasted. To me it comes down to this. I rather not spend a month stripping a car when I could be playing with my daughter every evening after working all day. What's your time worth to you? |
