|
|
This is frustrating the heck out of me on my 1963 Ghia Converitble. Notice that my rear parcel tray sits way lower than my rear seat back.
Question time:
1) From the photos I posted above, can you tell if my rear parcel tray is in the correct position?
2) If it is in the correct position, is it possible I have the incorrect seat back from a coupe installed in my convertible?
3) When folded down, the rear seat back top aligns somewhat closely with the front of the seat cushion and sits flat leading me to believe that the seat back may be aligned correctly...
I currently have about an 8 inch gap between the bottom of my rear seat back and the rear seat cushion.
4) Is it possible for anyone to post a photo showing the correct positioning of the OEM rear seat hinge both to the body and to the seat so I can see where I need to install? My seat back was reupholstered so there are no holes to align to + I have the piano style hinges not the ORM swivel ones.....
HELP!! |

Here are some photos I found in the gallery section:
I recall other posts were folks were concerned about the gap between the top and bottom cushions, so it may be normal. But 8" seems like a lot...
Here's a very nicely trimmed out parcel tray:

I'm looking above my parcel tray and it appears to be missing the apron. Is that a separate piece?

Hi Darrell --
That is the package tray behind the seat. Either it is situated too low or my seat is too high.
That's why I am asking - does the parcel tray look correct at that position. |

8 in. cant be correct, too big of a gap. Your seat is not in original covering and I dont even see a package tray in your pic. A previous owner played with your car. You will need to pull off the blk vinyl covering to see whats underneath, it may show where the vert hinges would go. It may or not be the right seatback. |
Also - you may very well be right. That's why I've asked and PMed numerous people for 1963 seat back dimensions and no one has replied back with the proper height for me to check. I am happy to pull off the vinyl on my seats to check, but I think the PO just reupholstered the seats. |

Oh god that CV frame scares me. Next thing on my to do list
Yes - the carpeted thing is my parcel tray, but I may just remove it and trim it in vinyl. Thanks for posting the picture. Not sure what to do - to hook, or not to hook. That us the question.
I've got a homemade seat post if that's the right way...just not sure it is..is there even a definitive answer?
BY the way...in that photo of the 66 above, he must have two rubber seat straps then. One above and one below. |

I believe you! I've got both options (well I made a home made post) and I bought the hooks so I can go either route.
I'm about to just offer someone with a 63' $20 bucks and see if that motivates them to give me the rear seat measurements lol |

Next questions:
1) The parcel tray is really just the top body portion of the rear trunk space right? I looked at Nicholas' restoration and don't see a separate shelf, just the body.
2) What is the correct covering for this "shelf"? I have carpet but I am assuming that's not right.
3) If vinyl, how to you keep it flat so it doesn't go into the "ridges" of the parcel shelf?[/b] |

A piece of cardboard, covered in vinyl, is what should be there Paul.

So just cut a piece of hardboard (I assume that's what you meant and not cardboard) and that sits on top of the body metal of the "shelf" I can see in Nicholas' photo?
Also is the board covered in vinyl just glued to the body shelf? |

When I had my car redone, I had a piece of cardboard installed. Also, the VW parts list lists the part as 'cardboard - parcel tray'. That said, mine's not original, so someone else who has such a piece could probably chime in.
Lightly glued in. Also, remember that you are going to have the screw holding down the rubber strap going through the cardboard into the metal parcel tray. There shouldn't be much if any, movement.

Update: As usual, you are correct Nicholas. It is cardboard. If anyone is wondering where to find this material, I picked up a 4x6 sheet at hobby lobby for 7 bucks. It's called Framing Matte Board. Exactly the same stuff Nicholas mentions.
I also went to an auto upholstery supply store and purchased some 1/8 inch foam padding.
A couple questions:
1) I am assuming the cardboard is what attaches to the parcel tray, then the foam on top, then the vinyl - correct?
2) Is the parcel tray really just secured in by the side convertible hinge covers (2 screws) along with being welded to the back of the body? The crappy photo below shows my parcel tray just kind of hanging there. I though this was supposed to be a solid piece - How many screws are used to secure this to the CV side hinge panels and where?
Notice how the sides of my parcel tray are just sort of dangling there.
