Dude I'd stay away from both of them. U get what u pay for. Go get Scat ceramic coated headers. Been using them for the past 6 years nd I haven't even seen one that comes close! They sub it out to AL's headers and the fit is perfect and it's a thing of beauty. And for the last time 1 1/2! Wink

Bugpack make a very good quality exhaust. Get the 1 1/2" and Hide-Out muffler.

For what's it's worth, we run a 1-1/2 sidewinder on our 1776:
  • 69mm Counterweighted Crankshaft
  • Ported and Polished L3 Heads
  • Light Flywheel (10lbs)
  • Full Flow Oiling System
  • Dual 40 IDF Weber
  • 110 Cam
  • 8.5:1 CR

We have almost 30,000 miles on that setup and has good power.

Here is a reference I have found... Just FYI.. I would stick with 1 1/2" like everyone else has mentioned...

I believe this is from an "Older" hot Vw's article I believe

If it idles fine with a 30/31 the cam is puny (Eg: Engle 100 or smaller). So it will run fine with a 1 3/8 or 1 1/2". Going larger will create a mismatch.

Just found out that my heads are probably 042 heads in a 050 casting. So I might have the 40 x 35.5 valves. And my cam is a hydraulic grind one above stock. Emailed mofoco to see if it's equal to a engle 110.

Well, that changes things. So yea a 1.5 is the biggest. Mofoco heads are normally off the shelf as cast, unported. I cant stand not knowing what In an engine, so I would pull the oil pump and heads to look.

Like I said, it's not equivalent to a 110 because it would not idle well with the 30/31 if it had that much duration. It's a small cam, and you should go small on the exhaust to match it.

Looks like my cam is equal or comparable to a W100. But in a hydraulic motor. Is this can too small? Sounds like everyone agreed on 1.5 headers. And dual 40s will be installed this week

I would use the 1.5 max with that cr. but if you ever decide to go big you will need a new header too, but there cheep so just go with the 1.5 now or bump the cr to about 10.:1,.040 piston to head clearance, check cam&rocker may need to add some ratio&springs. it will run good but then theres runs better!!!so choose wizely as your pocker&butt dyno readout tell's you to do.

042's come standard with larger than stock ports from the foundry. Use 1 1/2" exhaust. For more snap off idle with the hydraulic cam, you can install 1.25 ratio rockers.

So now that we know I have the smaller valves, would the Tri-mil 2-tip exhaust be too restrictive? Looking for loud throaty sound. Anybody know anything about the vintage speed mufflers?

Vintage speed mufflers are bigger then,1-3/8 inch outside diameter. Not made for stock engines. Sad

Ok but the 38mm is equal to a 1.5" header. Why wouldn't it work?

Anybody see anything wrong with running a 1 3/8 J-Tubes and header with 35.5 exhaust valves?
