I was talking about the engine, Weezle! LOL |
Oh yeh I know that. I was just mentioning how I got it off. Actually they lifted it up and the pan which was on dollies was pulled out. Usually i see people move the body off the pan. But we snatched the pan out from under the body
If you really want that engine then PM me. It won't be free but having someone collect It from me rather than packing and shipping would definitely get the lowest price. PM me if interested.
Now if I can post a video here I can show the "pan-pull" technique _________________ I got a fever, and the only prescription is more beetles!

I guess its not as bad as some I've seen on this website, but its more than I was hoping for.
left front bumper mount is 100% shot, under the makeshift bracket there is a hole about 3" and the bumper captured nuts are compromised. For some reason, can't find that photo, there is much less rust at the right front bumper bracket. Almost none under this bracket but some rust thru around it:
the rest of the right front wheelhouse:
base of strut tower:
crapy patch panel covering rust:
rust thru at right strut tower:
same area from inside trunk:
left wheelhouse and side of engine bay:
the right rear wheelhouse has the same stuff at the back of the heater channel, but no rust through next to the engine like the left.
so in summary:
Base of A pillar in wheehouse both sides
small rust thru near right strut mount
tail end of heater channels in rear wheelhouse areas both sides
left front bumper mount gone
hole near right front bumper mount
hole in left engine bay thru to rear wheelhouse..
I think thats about it.
so "how bad" is this? I'm wondering if its not better to alkalyne dip this body instead of media blasting it. I ordered some patch panels for the areas that are rusted through:
Strut Tower Section, Right 10x13
Fits VW Super Beetle 1971-1979
Part #: 95 13 42 2
1 $29.95
Wheelhouse (With Bumper Bracket Retainer, Front, Front Section,) Left. 71-79 Super Beetle.
Part #: 95 13 41 1
1 $29.95
Wheelhouse Front, Lower, Rear Section, Left
71-79 Super Beetle
Part #: 95 13 38 1
1 $29.95
Wheelhouse Front, Lower, Rear Section, Right
71-79 Super Beetle
Part #: 95 13 38 2
I'm guessing I need still the front of the wheelhouse on both rear sides.
So unfortunately I don't know how to weld. I am thinking leave the welding, body and paint to professionals and just reassemble everything myself. I think what I would spend on a welder would probably cover the cost of welding in the patch panels. The heater, convertible reinforcement and floorboards look ok except for the very ends seen in the photos.
Dunno, I guess I'm asking for input on what you guys would do.... thanks. _________________ I got a fever, and the only prescription is more beetles!

I don't know what your finance situation is but you can get a very good mig welder for around $300. It would be 110 for household current. I did my 74 and looked much worse then yours. You say you don't know how to weld but mig welding is not hard at all. The bonus is that most of the areas you just showed won't be visible so you can practice on them and nobody will see your welds if that concerns you. You can also go to Lowes and get some 22 gauge steel to practice on. I'm sure you'll use the 22 gauge for patch panels anyway. It's not a hard job at all. If you have the patience to do all the electrical work you can mig weld. Just clean all the metal real good and it will go so much easier. |

Thanks for the input. I will read up on mig welding.
Do you think media blasting can clear away all that rust? The place I plan to use utilizes plastic for paint and bodywork removal and aluminum for rust removal. They steam pressure clean off gunk and undercoating first . My other option is alkaline dip with electrolytic rust removal. It's a lot more money but all the rust will be gone. I can shoot several cans of Eastwood frame paint into all the nooks and crannies with the long tube they supply. The dipping place offers a self etching primer, the blast place an epoxy primer. Does anyone paint the bare shell with master series anti rust primer? Or is epoxy better. I suppose media blasting will make a good rough surface for the primer to grab onto. _________________ I got a fever, and the only prescription is more beetles!

I am the wrong guy to ask when it comes to rust removal and paint. there are guys who know way more than me on that stuff. |

Ok so I took off the access panel that covers the shift link at the tranny. I'm looking I the hole and it looks like someone spliced one of the metal fuel lines!:
This isn't good. Changing the fuel lines in a FI super is gonna suck
Also: what is the goop
Around all the exit
Holes for the
Various cables exiting here :
Is it factory? Seam sealer? PO bugger fix for missing grommets? Anyone?
Also the quote I got for fixing the rust in the photos above is $2200. Looks like I'm gonna learn how to weld _________________ I got a fever, and the only prescription is more beetles!

front suspension already removed. tomorrow work on the rear. I'm hoping after that the pan is a bit lighter. Its still heavy as crap and hard to move. I thought it would be pretty light and easy to flip over and stuff...nope
anyway after rear suspension bits are off its time for media blasting of that baby and some master series to finish it. I'm looking forward to REassembling this thing.
Mobile welder dude was a bit more than expected. to fix all the rust I posted here was about 2200. I'm thinking I will try to do some welding myself. If I can't do it, I wasted $300 on a welder. If I can, I saved 1900 in labor _________________ I got a fever, and the only prescription is more beetles!

It will look much better in the OG color, nothing on the body is painted black, so all that BS black paint in the trunk needs to be OG blue too. _________________ Good Luck

Took apart the struts today for new refills and painting. The springs wl be swapped for Topline springs.
There is what looks like a pipe cap with a hole in it that traps the cartridge into the housing:
Used a pipe wrench on this "pipe". Worked great.
Red strut cartridge is red Sachs....original? Anyway was all greasy and pretty easy to compress so switching to KYB GR2 gas all around. I read these make the front higher but the sport springs make the front lower so it should be a wash. Not trying to lower it. _________________ I got a fever, and the only prescription is more beetles!
