We already have driverless cars, they're called trains. You get in, sit down, and read or sleep, whatever and suddenly you're there!
Sometimes I look back on what we used to have, luxury trains, Zeppelins, etc and wonder have we really advanced?
I'm kidding of course, I love my Westy. Being able to stop or pull off and explore a back road. The OP's original statement about being able to sleep through boring parts of the drive I can relate to.
That's why I like to travel with someone so we can trade off the chore of driving through eastern Washington, northern Utah, etc. on our way to the fun places! _________________ Currently:

I found a new GPS with lifetime maps at Costco for the same price as the update |
We got one too, a Tom Tom from Costco. It's great. Gives you free updates on traffic cameras and traffic conditions as well.
The "lifetime" is a bit misleading, unfortunately. It's for the life of the GPS only as long as Tom Tom supports it. Once they drop that model, no more updates. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

DIY Driverless kits already exist-
I saw one in West Virgina 30 years ago. Pickup truck pulled out of a road house bar in front of me, and I had to follow it 20 miles home while it weaved and swayed all over the 2 lane. It finally drove off the road and parked on the dirt in front of a trailer home. No one got out. _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?
