That is correct, you need all the sections. Don't worry, it is part of the learning curve. It was so rusty it would have been very hard to see all the sections. I should have mentioned that beforehand. Once you have all the sections you will be able to see the inter-relationship and weld away. Thanks for the update..love this Bus. I'm really looking forward to doing the mechanical. I'm looking into a type 3 front beam..saw a guy on KCW that did it and it worked well. Any one gone down that road here?

Some factory assembly rockers didn't have the stiffener so technically you could go without it. Don't know the rhyme or reason for not having it vs having it. I like knowing that my threshold can have more weight on it like a ramp or something loaded onto it.

I would assume that being a double door you really need the stiffeners on this. I would also assume that's why this one has the 3 piece belly pans as well, for strength.

There's nothing fancy about the stiffener, if you have access to a sheet metal brake you could make it pretty easily, if you were really chomping at the bit to get welding. It does make the sill area much more rigid.

Correct on both accounts..the DD needed more reinforcement and it would be an easy section to fab..Doug check your pm's

Got a little more done today. Decided to work on the dogleg on the passenger side since I'm in a bit of a holding pattern for inner rockers.
here's the before pic of the passenger dogleg

found some rust on the inner part of the pillar between the halves of the dogleg where I won't be able to get to it after they new panels are put in

So I took to grinding all teh rust off then welding up all the pinholes, then grinding it all back smooth for a good solid surface to attach the inner dogleg to when I'm ready

The splotches you see are where I started to spray some weld thru primer on only to find it was too cold to spray anything and it just sort of sputtered and stopped. Have to wait for a bit warmer day lol.
Then, before I can even THINK of mounting in the inner dogleg, I get to deal with THIS on the A pillar:

Luckily, I already have some patch pieces for this from KF, just hope they are enough. Anyone out there selling a shop full of metal fab equipment cheap? Laughing

There about 100,000 shops that have died in the rust belt over the last 20 years thanks to NAFTA. There is lots of that king of stuff floating around on the mid-west auction circuit..we will have to take a road trip!

Cut into the passenger A-pillar today and here's what I found.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

could be worse, I GUESS.....
Got the outer all removed and the inner the inner A-pillar was compromised as well.

So out it comes...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

then the new funky green test fitted and predrilled. notice how one of the welded points is sort of in the middle of the piece behind it, not right along the edge where I would have thought it was. This gave me a headache till I figured out where the welds were

and 3 and a half freaking hours later, the inner A-pillar repair section welded in.

Now to grind the surfaces and work on lining up the outer repair section and repairing the door hinge mount, tomorrow! I need a strong drink now! This Pillar area is a giant PITA, can't believe how much comes together down here. Hope it all lines up ok when I get that dogleg assembly in!

Bout time I put something new up here after a long cold winter that still doesn't seem to want to end here in Colorado. I am currently nearing fitting the front floor, have the right front inner dogleg in place (mostly) and am now adapting a type 3 beam into the front of this bad boy. Theres a thread over at the KCW website about doing it. http://www.kustomcoachwerks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=8204&start=15#p214021
I'm going to give it a shot, it looks like a pretty decent swap with some minor modifications. The guy that did it doesn't have great pics or instructions, but I've contacted him and he's being super helpful, so I'm going for it. Already have the beam tacked into place and the type 3 trans and spring plate swap done (with much help from Manfred of German Built Restorations) to bring the rear ride height in line with where the front end SHOULD end up sitting after all this. I'll get all my pics of the work I've managed to get done over the last few months soon. Feel free to rattle my cage if I don't!

Here's a little bit of a preview
This is the outer part of the right a-pillar repair panel after it was welded in. It was a little short.

So I took out my trusty mig and just built it up.

This is a pic of the test fitting of the inner dogleg. It is installed now and I'll get the pics of that and the close to finished A pillar repair shortly

Womack built off set spring plates were a flawless install for the type 3 trans. The T-3 front beam is coming along nicely. Thanks to Mr. Gas for checking out the trans. 1500 sp in close to completion as well. Thanks for the pics Mike!!!
