|
|
I remember seeing pictures and reading that there should be no issues with running stock rims inside out for more back spacing.
I searched and cannot find a good discussion.
Can anyone confirm this? I have a set of 4.5" x 15" that I would like use backwards so can get a larger tire under the buggy.
Any surprises to be concerned about?
Thanks, Jeff _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

I ran them on a '63 beetle for a year going to college driving 130 miles per day. Never had one problem.
It can only be done with the wide 5 wheels, not the 4 lug wheels. The hub cap clips have to be removed. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

For 4 bolt - try wheel spacers and longer lug bolts (or studs). _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |

I have 2 wide five rims set up like that which have 14" wide (yes, wide) rims attached to them for sand paddles. if I ever get next to a set of used paddles for cheap I will have a set for a Oregon Dunes trip.
The offset is completely positive, so the inside of the rim is outside of my fender. I'm sure it will look like a freakshow. |

Awesome, this is great news, (I may leave the air filler on the inside, since it won't be terrible to reach back there) _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

I saw this thread this morning and wasn't sure I should admit to doing that. The back of the wide 5 rim doesn't have a perfect ball seat. I enhanced it with a stone on my drill to remove a ridge that could have scored the lug bolts. I can say it worked well for me, even if it isn't really correct. _________________

EVFun, did you leave the air stem on the "inside"?
JCool, do you think a 31 x 10.5 equivalent would fit on a 4.5" wide rim? _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

Yes, I simply removed the rivets holding the hub cap clips and knocked them and the clips off. I then cleaned up the back side with a stone on my drill, I'm not sure what angle, but it was a best fit to where the ball seat lug bolt would hit and it was just a light touch to remove a small sharp edge on the reverse side. Then I ran them on a baja bug for a year or so, before I sold it. This wasn't your normal baja, it was a lowered "street style" baja with moon disks over the wheels. _________________

It turned out really nice and I am happy with the appearance.
