Are split beetle rear drums different to later beetles or would pre 67 rears fit?

Split-type rear drums went up to '57. The earlier version has an oval shaped hole for adjusting the brakes. Post '57 will fit, but you have to change the backing plates too then. I've heard of people machining '58 to '67 drums to make them fit the older style backing plate.
