I've been going through Jeff Hibbards book Baja Bugs and Buggies for the 3rd time and making notes of anything I missed or forgot to look into. The book is great but some of the brands and stuff are outdated. The first pages are dedicated to air filters. I've been trying to do research on one the book mentions but haven't had much luck finding out how well they work or where I can buy one.
I like the idea of having the replaceable paper filter and not having to oil it. Having the replacement filters be readily available would be great. I also need an air filter that is enclosed/covered because it rains here a lot and there is mud/water involved where I live. I'll be driving a lot on dusty gravel and dirt roads with a little sand here and there. This is for a stock 1600 with the stock solex carb.
What are the other alternatives that meet all or most of my requirements?
Thanks for any help, its greatly appreciated! _________________ Multi-year baja project that seems to never end

Moore has a decent selection of somewhat affordable air filer housings that use large, paper elements.
Personally I use a GM full-size van filter setup. It is somewhat centrifugal, enclosed, and has affordable paper elements that are available pretty much any where. You can see it pretty clearly in this picture

What are the pros and cons to gauze vs paper? If I find a suitable filter but it has, say a 2 5/8" or 3" neck, whats the best way to adapt to the 2" intake my sole carb has? Would a metal or PVC reducer reduce the airflow to much? _________________ Multi-year baja project that seems to never end

Gauze generally is woven around a thin metal screen and most times requires the use of oil. The more the oil gets "dirty" the better it filters supposedly. Guaze is thought to flow more air. Paper is simpler but more fool proof. It's a little restrictive but as long as it's replaced frequently it will always filter where as gauze can dry out and stop filtering all together.
When I first got my baja with Kadrons I attempted to find a paper element that would fit rather than use the gauze one that come with all the kits. No luck... so far.
Sometimes you can get lucky and find a 'Fernco' as they're reffered to which is rubber reduces pipe. You can find them in plumbing sections. No need to use PVC. Find some exhaust tubing or better yet aluminum or stainless. _________________ Brian H.

I love the spun filters. And a two stage is even more gooder. _________________ Wash your hands

I'll be driving the car in the spring, summer, and fall. Basically whenever the snow melts and thaws, I am in northern Wisconsin after all. The lowest temperature I would encounter would be in the 30's and 40's. With these air filters they don't have a preheat function like the oil bath ones do. Is not having that function bad? What will it effect?
I found this one here, seems interesting. Anyone had any experience with these or heard anything about them or how well you would think it would work?

Holy poo, $33?
But how would those hold up in the whoops? _________________ Wash your hands

Is that a good holy poo or a bad holy poo?
I'm not really worried about how well they stay on the carb because no matter which one I get I will still make a secure mount for it. Probably weld on a bracket to the fan shroud or something. To bad that ones not in stock atm. Wonder how it performs too. Any other thoughts on it? _________________ Multi-year baja project that seems to never end

The element itself will cost $30 so that's good IMO. If you can strap that mofo down, it would be dope. K&N washable, wash it every so often and you're golden. _________________ Wash your hands

Between the late model stock paper filter and that aluminum 1 or 2 stage filter, which one would have the greatest performance filtering wise? Say I only used it as a 1 stage (probably wouldn't but it gives the best comparison) so just the outer paper element, which one of the 2 would be better? Which one would be better if I did use the 2nd stage foam insert in the aluminum one? And is there any drawbacks to not having an air filter with pre-heat on my stock engine stock carb? _________________ Multi-year baja project that seems to never end

take a piece of cloth and blow through it. now bow through 3 pieces, then 4. Air flow will go down but filtration will go up.
A two stage paper / oiled foam filter has low flow but best filtration. I'm a strong believer of oiled filters though. You won't suffer too much without preheat. _________________ Wash your hands

Slightly more restrictive for the same size. Comparisons like that only work for apples to apples. Depending the filters and surface area, the dual stage can flow significantly better than a single stage. Apples to apples.
Then again, I'm the off road weenie who is putting in an oil bath air cleaner. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

If one was after a pretty serious pre cleaner, here's one
that's affordable and would appear to filter some fine
dust.

That is rated for 150 cfm, which is right about the minimum you would want with a 1600. _________________ Member of the baja's that don't run club, for now!! |

Those are all fantastic air cleaners. That being said, for 99% of us on TheSamba, they will never be worth the expense. Now if you plan on desert racing long distances, then heck yeah, suddenly a couple hundred bucks on a filter doesn't sound so crazy. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295
