It starts Saturday morning 9/6/14, runs through noon Tuesday 9/9/14
Burly reports the salt is dry, forecast has zero precipitation. The 2013 WOS was cancelled due to water on the course/rain/impending storms...
Translation: This year's WOS is going to be a killer event!

I would imagine most within a 1000 miles will be loading today (I am) and heading out early Thursday the 4th. I'd like to get the car through tech on Friday so I'm ready to run on Saturday when the track opens.
Into the big yellow truck it goes......... _________________ 30 years experience in the sales of new and used auto parts!

good luck to all, be safe and have fun.
that is a rather odd beastie you have there mr motorhead, I'd imagine a fair bit of time went into grafting all the bits together.
as an aside, has anyone tried running the vw local manufacture "protection plate for front end" as seen on p41 and 42 of "vw beetle in motorspost" by peter noad? basically a undertray that runs from behind the bumper to the behind the framehead and looks as though it would give a slight advantage by cleaning up some of the airflow under the car.
if anyone has the local manufacture drawings for the version to suit early cars, I'd love a copy. |

Just a couple shots from Monday with the compressor installed. We made it home yesterday (Tuesday) and got all unloaded and passed out for a few hours. I don't feel quite as road rashed today so I thought I'd post to this thread. I'll post on the Speedwell supercharger thread with some results and observations I made about running it in a few days.
First run with the blower
Third and last run on Monday
A big thank you goes out to everyone who donated to the gas fund!! _________________ 30 years experience in the sales of new and used auto parts!

What an event! Record number of participants for both the VW's, and the other cars.
How about Darrel Vittone running top speed of the meet, in Russel Richie's Empi Inch Pincher <replica> of 115mph with a 36hp engine, gaining admission into the "1 Club"??? Reworked Denzel heads topped with 48IDA's, and 50yrs of VW experience inside that engine...
Then Jan and Wayne Attkinson besting Vittone's 115 by less than 1mph, to take over the top spot of the meet, with a single carb engine?
Jerry gaining 1 club status with his home brewed turbo 36hp, after de-coking the wastegate and getting some boost...
The McAllister Boys at Blackline Racing, Dick Landy blower atop a 2332, running above 130mph, trying to get into the 150club. After seizing up the blower, driving back to SLC, repairing the wounded huffer by turning the damaged rotors in a lathe, reassembling it, and running STRONG the following day... I don't think they broke the 150 barrier, but that thing sounded healthy, had that supercharged 'crack' exhaust note!
Dick Beith's motorhome breaks down enroute to Bonneville in Reno (I swear, that motorhome is cursed). After a couple phone calls, yours truly to the rescue with my 1-ton van, 'The Beast' picked up Dick, car w/trailer, crew and gear, towed the last 450miles out to the salt. The 'Bugliner' as it's been dubbed, ran it's fastest speed to date, 117mph, after futsin' around with the GM/Beith fuel injection... Lots of untapped potential with the ultra-slippery Beetle. Great to see 78yr old Dick still enthusiastic about VW hotrodding, I know the guy is an inspiration to me
Britt Grannis builds a 3rd Karmann Ghia salt racer in 4 yrs, teams up with Jerry Avis with Jerry's time capsule 36hp 'hot-rod' engine (Craig's List find), originally built for the famous 'Rivets' dune buggy. Finishing up a few last minute things on Saturday, you know, installing an engine, mounting the seat, complete wiring of the car out on the salt. Britt proves once again how a good work ethic and help from your friends results in a straight-running, hard charging racecar. I think Britt manged an 84mph on an 89mph record, but the car wasn't quite in the correct legal body trim, no bumpers. Didn't matter, my friend was having tons of fun, he even let me drive the car, so I got my salt fix for the year!
The two-car team of Brian and Leesa Houston/Juan Cole had some great amazing results: Leesa set one of the Ghia records (Sorry you guys, I forget which one, super-stock 1600/big block maybe?). I helped swap engines over to their IDA topped 2332, where they missed getting into the 150club by a few mph's. Juan reworked the stone stock 36hp to try to wrestle the record from Dan Durrie (I think Dan currently holds the Bonneville stone stock beetle record?). But the head wind conditions conspired against any such record.
Matt Kinney with the Pepco blower on his 36hp (see Matt's story). Always great to see you, Matt!
Tom with his 36hp Manx buggy getting into the 1 club!
In Non-VW news, we watched Danny Thompson, son of the late Mickey Thompson, run an unprecedented 419mph flying mile average (w/424mph exit speed!) on a 396mph record, to gain him an impound spot (you want to be sent to impound, it means you are qualified for a record attempt the following morning). OMG that thing absolutely thundered down the long course, everyone stopped and took notice. Their was a full on professional film crew documenting the entire affair, we heard they are scheduled to be there all week or until they get the record. Maybe we'll eventually see something on MAVTV or a Discovery Channel Special...
There are many, many other stories, these are just a few... |

Damn, I'm sorry Juan had to run with a HEAD wind!!!
He seems to run fine at Mojave, though.
With his dogged determination, he'll eventually get it done at Bonneville as well.

Yes, it was a truly fantastic time, seeing old friends, and making new ones. It's always a pleasure to see Tom Simon, (Burly PROMISED he won't publish that photo, Tom )Darrell and Collin, Jan and Wayne Atkinson, the Blackline crew, and all the rest. Unfortunately, the A/Fuel Streamliner I help with, only made one run (Note to self- next time the driver says "it felt funny" do a compression test, and find the 65% nitro hole in the piston BEFORE the alcohol/nitro mix makes it's way into the oil pan and ignites, GAWD whatta mess !!!) _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story
