Low speed - tires lost grip, turned 180, hit a median...

My guess on the damage:
Bent trailing arm
Bent wheel
Bent shock
Remember the Thing trailing arm is not the same as a bug. The shock mount is higher. Also inspect the cvs, axle and transmission and mounts for damage. |

On the bright side, there wasn't any body damage and you are unhurt. It could've been a lot worse. Now you've got to get 'er fixed and back on the road in the next few weeks. There is a VOSA (Volkswagen Owners of San Antonio) cruise to Boerne on 9/27 and a show on 9/28 in San Antonio. Hope to see you there with your Thing back on the road! |

Here is another view of the damage I took yesterday. I hope to remove the rear wheels later today and see what else I can see...
I'm guessing the trailing arm, cv shaft, shock mount, shock, wheel are all bent.

hey rrankin,
so sorry your Thing got damaged, but somthing comes to mind,
As slow as my Thing is, even at low speed, how would a tire loose grip and spin out, do you think somthing got jammed to cause it?

I saw in the first photo rain on the mirror of the flatbed. Would seem to me that his thing spun out in the rain and lost traction causing the chain of events. _________________ Supposed to be 77käfer, but there are no umlauts on an american keyboard

My thoughts too.... Car is dry, road appears dry, truck is dry... Sky is partly cloudy. Could it have been one of those quickly Texas rain storms, or maybe gravel or other debris on the roadway?
That was a significant hit, to bend it that much... How low, is "low speed"?
Weird.......
Glad it wasn't worse!

same thing happened to me, I think on the same day! only I didn't hit anything! thankfully! And to answer the ?'s, yes, there was a small shower down here in central Texas the other day, first rain in months!, and you know how slick the road gets when it hasn't rained in a loooong time, right? build up of oil, dust, etc. add a little water, slip-n-slide... _________________ '67 Westy pearl white "Greta"

I did something very similar several years back. It had snowed and I went over a bridge that crosses an irrigation canal. My rig was doing fine in the snow despite not having any sort of snow tires, but the ice on the bridge was something else. I spun, did a 180, hit the curb just the other side of the bridge, and bent the trailing arm. I was less than a mile from home too! _________________ "I like how everyone likes talking about Zeke's Thing yet he's the only one that's ever seen it." - Katie

In March 2012 I want off roading in Landers, CA and busted my rear trailing arm.
The crack repair really did not work and I noiw have reinforced them.

It had rained for about 5 minutes and stopped. It brought all the oil to the surface, but wasn't enough to wash it off the road bed. The Tow truck took about an hour to get there and by that time all the rain was dried up. You can see the rain spots on the truck mirror.
I was changing lanes from the far right turn lane (ending) to the far right lane. The back tires lost grip first. As I attempted to correct the front let loose and before I knew it the back was swinging around. I hit a small median about the side of a curb. Had I been going faster I could have flipped.
I know nothing locked up, because I drove it to the side of the road with little difficulty. _________________ '74 Thing [Fritz]

Trailing arm, CV shaft, and Wheel(rim) are the only bent parts from what I can see with the rear wheels off and the car jacked up.
The list I need to order:
1. trailing arm
2. bushings for both trailing arms
3. CV shaft (or 2)
4. All 4 CV Boots
5. real wheel barrings -both sides
6. Rear break pads - both sides
7. two rear shock absorbers
8. 4 new tires?
9. Wheel(rim)
I'm trying to do as much as I can while I'm tearing the back apart to fix this... What are the common sense and not so common things that I should do while I've got this all apart? _________________ '74 Thing [Fritz]

I'm not sure what you mean by "CV Shaft"? There are CV joints and the axle shaft on each side. If the axle is bent, you could replace it and rebuild the CV joints. If you broke or cracked a CV or cage, you can replace it and save the axle. For the cost and time involved, I think you should just buy the whole set from TTS:
http://www.thethingshop.com/C_V-AXLE-SET-2-JOINTS-1-AXLE/productinfo/181501CV-SET/
These come with new boots, new CVs and a new axle, greased and ready to go.
The list looks good. If you are replacing the brakes, you might also look at the wheel cylinders and both the soft and hard brake lines. Also clean and inspect or replace the brake adjuster/stars. |

Couple of questions...
Is the Passenger side considered the Right side (when ordering Trailing arms)? got a part number so there is no mistake?
Does someone know of a good exploded diagram of the rear axle wheel to transmission for the Thing I can refer to? I want to make sure I get new rubber parts for this job so I can order once and do it all quickly in a single weekend.
Stub axle? possibility of being bent?
Thanks all! _________________ '74 Thing [Fritz]

Yes, right and left parts on a car are based on if you are facing forward and driving the vehicle. |

Yes it is possible or it could be cracked. When you pull it, inspect it carefully. If you want to be sure it is good, have it magnafluxed. But then again, compare the price to buying a new unit. |

Ok Finally got the trailing arm out... damage is obvious from the bottom...
Again the bottom of the arm is at the top of the picture here...
Thanks so much for the help so far... now to assemble the replacement arm and get it installed. _________________ '74 Thing [Fritz]
