I just got informed that my truck has a short feature in 'Bus and Camper' magazine. much to my surprise, as I never gave away any info to anybody to be posted in print in a magazine by the ten thousands. It is not a big issue and I have given cars' info, stories and pics into other magazines for free, but whoever wrote the article could have kindly asked me for permission to take MY words, information and MY photos before doing that.
I thought TS to be a treasure chest for fellow VW afficionados and accompanying info rather than making business from other persons' property

Too weird about the magazine feature. I once found a picture of myself playing guitar in a local Battle of the Bands advertisement.
That's some damn cool history you've learned about that SC -- any progress stripping the paint? |

Did you know this pic? It also has been taken in 1957 at the funeral of Theodor Körner - showing a barndoor single cab with the license plate "W 76955" _________________ Blog website:www.austrosplit.com

started work on the original treasure chest door.
It's toast ( I know what you think Mark,just don't listen )
managed to save all the og hardware.
what's interesting is, that obviously the door assembly was only primered AFTER the hinges were bolted on. there is still bare metal under the rubber insulation pad
Tried to have some keys cut to the Z4** code on my treasure chest lock, but unfortunately none of the lock services would be able to identify my code.
I was thinking to myself that VW couldn't have been stupid enough to use 3 different keys in a car and assumed that doorlock and treasure chest would be the same. ordered some key blanks and disassembling the door handle was much easier and I filed the key blank so it would match the door handles internals. Then the same key wouldn't unlock the treasure lock, but I kept wiggling it and spraying anti seize in it, and it finally gave in (it was just the latch that was seized). Here's the confirmation, both locks and key are the same code! (The code is only stamped on the treasure chest latch housing. no code stamped on the door handle or lock cylinders)
here's the og July 53 29. handle

Thanx to Mark and Gunther for some inspiration, I got the 53 out again and preparing for Hessisch. Put the old girl on the lift and pressure washed the undercarriage and to my surprise it came out nice. There was never any undercoating on the chassis and floors. Looks a lot nicer than it really is of course. Still needs a lot of welding and I am not complaining. but I am going to try for chemical stripping the rusted areas and not sand blast. I hate the thought of dust and sand getting caught in all of those zillions of Single cab structure beams and cavities.
here's a short walkaround

A good way to remove that top layer of paint is to spray oven cleaner on it and let it sit. I like to let it sit for about 10 minutes and then hose it off to see what is left. Then I spray some of the oven cleaner into a container and paint it on the spots of paint that are left. Repeat the hosing of again after 10 minutes. I usually repeat this step numerous times as it doesn't take much work and is really just a waiting game. Just make sure you don't forget about it and let it eat too far! The stuff works slow enough that it really shouldn't be a worry. But after you think you have all of the paint off that you feel safe getting with the oven cleaner, take a rag with some non-acetone nail polish remover and rub out the remaining spots. I like to use non-acetone because it is less caustic and gives you much more control out what you are removing. It does take a lot of time though. You can check out my thread on my 68 to see what each different step looked like. _________________ Bagged 1968 Neptune Blue "Deluxe" |

Did you manage to take this truck to HO17?
I assume it needs more than just brakes to be road worthy?

I had it registered for HO17, but no way to get it street legal in time and I did not want to trailer. so wasn't at HO17. In Austria or Germany there is no way to get it street legal in this condition. as mentioned it needs a lot of welding in the treasure chest and floor structure along with rockers and doglegs. it has a very solid cab, load bed and main chassis though. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !
