Hey guys.

This week I'm going down to view this 1965 bug that's crying to be back on the road, she has been sat for 27 years since the old 6v motor blew.

She is about 9 miles out of my home town currently and a one owned car from new, and still has all the original documents.

Seeing the 65 bug for the first time to check it out, recorded a little video and walk around, sorry for the background noise, its been sat for 24 years local to where i live, and hoping to snap it up as a project, and something worth saving being a 1965.

Check out the video:

Shocked WOW !! I'm going to be honest, that bug isn't worth throwing a single dime into. Even if it were given to you, you paid too much!

Also, that's NOT a '65, it's a '66. The rims and hubcaps are easy giveaways ( though they could be changed) the next giveaway is the round heater knobs and the chrome on the inside door panels. If your vin number starts with "116", it's a '66. If it starts with "115", it's a '65. I know that a LOT of our VW's got title with the wrong year, mine included. Your bug was likely made after Aug of '65 as title as a '65 even though it's a '66. My '65 was built Aug of '64 and was accidentally titled as a '64 because they used the build date and not the production ( or model ) year.

Absolutely not. If it were a split window or a '55 and down oval then maybe, but not a '66. Sorry. You will be better off buying a more expensive and solid bug now because it will actually save you money in the end.

Also, in the U.S. the '66's got the "1300" badge on the deck lid. You look like you're in Europe and I know that they still had a few engine options so not all got that badge.

*edit: I see you have the 1300 badge.

dose it make any difference if it was free in the first place Wink

Still think its something i want to slowly restore, i have spare time at weekends, so i think its still a go ahead for me even if i re-shell it!

it dose have the 1300 badge on the decklid, so im assuming your are right Smile, but will double check my vins when i get home.

Not trying to be a dick, just trying to give you a reality check. I've been involved with these cars for 20 years and we all did what you're doing and didn't see the reality or scope of what really needs to be done. You would need a whole new car to fix that car.

A quick obvious list:

Heater channels
Cowl
Floor pans
Roof
Likely a frame head
Front firewall
Front quarters
Rear quarters
Fenders likely
Rear apron
Front apron
Doors or door bottoms
Likely a beam
Napoleons hat
Rear luggage tray
I bet the backbone of the chassis is rotten too so, another chassis.

And LOTS more just to get you to a solid car that now needs MORE money and parts to finish.

Sometimes free is actually too expensive. In the end, you will have dumped a shitload of money into a car that is honestly not worth it. Yes, the split and oval guys are fixing cars that bad but, they are worth it the end. '65 and up cars are still relatively inexpensive and plentiful as far as "early" cars are concerned ( pre '68 )

Completely understand where you are coming from, and yes it sure does need all them things.

But its something thats going to be a labour of love, and i might need another car to build this one but at the end of the day if another shell is needed thats been sat on someones drive, its two bugs that have bought another one back on the road, that possibly never would be.

and also to be honest do we ever get back what we put into these cars, apart from possibly ovals or split's.

Many people do, they just put their time and money into a desirable car that gives back a greater return.

I don't believe in building a car for the next person, build it for yourself and don't worry about if you are going to make your money back in the end.

The problem is, you're going to dump a LOT of money into a still relatively, undesirable car that can be found in MUCH better condition for far less than the price of all the replacement metal you will need just to get started.

true true, but a friend of mine has a correct year body on a project thats solid just on a 72 pan, so the plan is to mate his solid body with my correctly stamped pan.

The spline of this pan is still solid and i already have pan halves. Smile

so i think im set up quite nicely to be honest, i understand the whole early bug and yes they are awesome, but i don't personally have the space to keep or maintain a early bug or give it the attention it would warrant.

a pre 67 bug has always been a think i've wanted, which this dose fall under the category of that.

maybe another man's rubbish is another mans treasure, falls into this category Smile

Besides the color of the heater levers, IRS rear suspension ( again you're in Europe so he could actually have a swingaxle '72 ) and the vin number, there isn't a difference between the '72 and '66 pan. They are stamped the same and are both balljoint beams.

Why not just take his complete project?

Sounds like you have it figured out though. Best of luck and keep us updated.

Well that changes everything, provided all the necessary paperwork is there.

Well today's been a fail think I need to buy a blow touch or impact gun to free off these rear hub bolts.

Tried with brute force then went out and bought the longest breaker bar I could find.

That didn't help. Car 1 me 0
