P.S., Cal--also install the rubber seals where the air-duct hoses meet the tin.

Those lines go to the left side (driver side in U.S.) of the two top, back, male fittings on your fuel tank. That is, if it's like my 1974 Super.

I can't remember the name of the small tin pieces ar either side of your heat risers. But they also have gaskets. And you have to buy them off the Samba Classifieds, since I don't think anyone makes them now.

Maybe if you lived Down Under--next door to Joel Wink .

Otherwise, you're in for a lot of remanufacturing of your car.

Cal--you can take out the spark plugs with the engine hot or warm. But you have to wait until the engie is cold to put them back in.

I just came in from the garage with that problem. Trying to tune and the pump was leaky. Pulled the pump and saw a small crack in the Bakelite in the flange so I pulled the rod then the flange. SAME EXACT piece stayed in mine! I tried for a bit wIth a screw then a reverse back-out bit but after wiggling and pulling I had nothing. Had to walk away for a minute before I got frustrated and cracked it off into the case or something. Any easier way to get this out?

Your car looks clean Calvinater! That's going to be a great first car! The vert we have has been in tha family since day one and will be my daughters first car in a few years. You'll have the coolest car in the school parking lot and you'll know everything about keeping it running by then also.

There's a Chris Vallone YouTube video where he uses a tap (5/16, maybe) and a pair of pliers and a hammer.

He taps the bakelite tube, screws in a long bolt that matches the new threads, clamps vice grips (maybe pliers) onto the bolt, and hits the vice grips with a hammer.

Squirt WD40 or oil in the hole, first.

I am glad to see other young guys taking an interest in VW's! I also tried to buy a project to restore with my dad and never got around to it. Bought and sold and eventually got my restored Super a lot like yours. Enjoy the short time while it lasts! Good bonding time with your dad that some never got to experience. I hope it turns out alright! (also, my fuel filter is securely attached inside the engine compartment and hasn't blown up yet. Just in case- keep a fire extinguisher handy! Wink I keep one in mine on the passenger side by the wheel well.) Have fun with it!

Howdy, long time since last post.(Looooong winter here)Anyway, The fuel tank was leaking, since removed, new one waiting in wings, the PO had installed copper fuel line alongside running board right side. Pressure tested bith OG line and PO line .Po line wins.Line in tunnel won't hold air. New brosol fuel pump, Temp. tank w/ inline filter setup. Started with gas down carb. Would not idle at all, pump checks okay, points good, wires and plugs good, idle solenoid good, removed, cleaned, reinstalled rockers. reset valves. still no idle, carb is apart as we speak should be back together tomorrow. Changed oil 3 times after trying to start on several occasions. Always smelled of gas. Flushed w/ diesel 50 or so revolutions with screw gun, (plugs removed) , Here's where advice is needed.
The diesel seemed to leak a fair amount in the area where the pistons mate with the case. Hard to tell with tin installed. oil weeps,. Our question is should we keep trying to get it to idle and comp test or should we drop the motor(first time for us, maybe even the car as the OG clamps are on the heater tubes)And see whats what in there?

Thanks
