Isn't that the whole idea of the drive-in... to get stuck there with your girl? Back row... facing away from the screen...

Wink

Okay, do you mean will it run the battery down using the new-fangled radio sound systems instead of the old wired speaker you hung on your window? Yes, and you may fry your coil and points while you are are at it, if your radio only comes on with the ignition on.

I think poster is referring to tuning the sound with his VW's radio.

No, your battery will survive. However, I'd NOT use a radio that's wired to the ignition circuit (like needs the key switched "on"), as that could damage points, etc. So I'd wire up the radio's power to the dome light circuit, like it was on my 1970 from the dealer (these all used dealer-installed radios). My 1971 radio was wired to the ignition circuit. This is straightforward to switch over, you just remember to turn the radio off when you shut off the engine, like lots of us did.

Last time my VW was at the drive in (1975 - 1977), sound was still provided by the drive-in speaker !!! Was in my hardtop, so maybe before I bought the '71 Convertible in 1976.

Why would you even have the radio on? Laughing

You are clearly NOT paying attention...if you are paying attention. Laughing

We recently went to a drive in movie theater at Bristol Tn and they still had the speakers to put in your window. They also had the radio station to tune into but the speakers they had were plenty loud enough.

We don't have them here anymore! I was lucky (years ago) to take my girls to one, in a bus, so they could lay down and watch (parked sideways) Also put them on the roof!
