Damn, that is horrible.
Can you explain how insurance works in Germany?
I can understand how the kid's family is responsible for this loss legally but not how the contents were not insured.
For instance, in the USA, a shop would normally be insured. My understanding is the insurance company would pay their client and then would go after the family for reimbursement. _________________ How to Post Photos

Everett, Any chance "TheSamba" would be willing to pool together donations from members and present them on "our" behalf ? I'll start with $100 for the cause. I know their are many many more here who would do the same. The only thing worse for the poor man would be losing family thankfully that did not happen.
Gutted I'm sure. _________________ 63 15 window deluxe Turkis walk through 1500

In the US, building insurance does not cover vehicles in the buildings.
If your barn burns down and there are vehicles inside, the vehicles are not covered by any insurance on the building. They are only insured if there are policies on the vehicles.
If you have a project bus that does not drive, it is a good idea to have insurance on it. "Storage insurance" costs much less than regular insurance, and covers vehicles that are not driven. It does -not- cover anything that happens when it is driven. But if the barn burns down or a tree falls on it, or it is stolen, it should be covered.
It makes me feel sick to my stomach to see those pictures. |

An old timer mentioned fire / theft insurance last weekend to me,,, guess it's time. He said he he would call his agent and get a "binder" for the 2 days a year he drove the vehicle (binder was free) and the insurance was pretty cheap. We won't discuss what kind of vehicle he drives... _________________ BreckSkier

The problem with the insurance is that the cars and everything else that was in the shop was not covered.
The suspect was a 11 year old boy, so his parents are responsible for him, but they are bankrupt.... |

wow, that is horrible.
as far as insurance goes, the home insurance of the home owner should cover whatever they cover, they will in turn try to recover the money from the guilty party. this looks like an agricultural property, insurance for that could be quite different.
Were the cars all owned by the home owner? _________________ regards

Sad to hear of this major loss. Reading the article, this line caught my eye.
:"And according to Lerch’s lawyer there is little hope to receive compensation payment, by other means, either. Lerch’s own insurance is not liable. After all, it was not him who has caused the damage."
It seems that maybe he did have insurance, but since the kid caused the fire, they won't pay. I guess that is the difference in laws of different countries. _________________ nothing |

Donation made. Come on people. Help a brother out. Even if he can't replace all the valuables inside he at least deserves a new shop and a couple vehicles.
I also donated to the dog fire thing and they have over 2 million dollars. Same deal, some kid started it... sad sad sad.

It would be interesting to determine how the claim(s) will be handled in Germany. In the USA, the building's insurance carrier would cover the building structure, and unless not in the policy contract or specifically excluded, to the personal property of the owner on the premises, and perhaps to unscheduled personal property of others, subject to a percentage of the coverage limit on the policy for such property.
What is normally excluded? vehicles subject to motor vehicle laws and/or normally licensed for road use. Your own ride needs to be insured by its own policy that covers the peril (fire/wind/vandalism, etc)
For business owners, garagekeeper's liability and garagekeeper's legal liability policies NORMALLY exclude coverage for customers' vehicles. That's not to say that the business is not liable for someone accessing the place and stealing or trashing your ride--it's just that you can't rely on his or her policy to cover it. Call your own vehicle's insurance carrier and they will investigate it.
Best advice: review your building policy and thoroughly review your vehicle policy for coverage-whether it is roadworthy or not. |

Wow, if that's how insurance works in Germany, that's crazy!
I'm amazed there wasn't coverage of some kind on the vehicles.
The first thing I do when I get any vehicle is to insure it.
And when I've had buses being restored at somebody's shop for extended periods,
I've called the insurance company to give them the address, just in case.
I'm PayPal-ing a bit to help out.
If everyone throws in a few, it will go a long way. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Yes agreed, if lots of people can put a few euros his way, that would be great.
