|
|
Hello,
I'm keen on building a Volksrod, but I'm pretty new to hot rods in general - although I'm not new to restoration / welding / modification etc.
I have spent some time looking at Volksrods, and have a question...
I don't like the look of using a beam extender, but I'm not familiar with the other front suspension setups I have seen, I assume most people use the old Ford front suspension setup, but what are the other popular options and the pro's and con's of each?
Thanks |

The beam extender to use a VW suspension is easy and works.
An adapter to use a Ford transverse leaf spring.. just looks so cool though.
Its really about the look you're after.
Some simply use the bolt on extender,
Some "flip" the beam,
Some create their own,
Some use a Ford style spring.
If I wanted the Ford leaf ...I'd build my own adapter before I bought a Speedway kit..
Search Fire Bug on Volksrods.com..... Beautiful ride, that had a bad outcome.
It made me change my initial build direction from the "unknown quality" to tried and true proven parts.

Thanks for the replys
I had seen the Speedway parts, but after reading the post Volkswagen nut sent, I wont be using that... Although, it does look good.
After doing some more research, I like the Ford I beam and tube axles. I don't like the look of beam extenders.
This is the style I'd like to go for:
Looks like I have some research to do... I don't know the first think about the Ford setup.
This setup looks different - no framehead, 2 sets of leaf springs:

That quarter elliptic front suspension is going to look cool. Not often seen and when I asked a rodder with a T using it he warned me they ride poorly. On the other hand, there isn't an engine in the front of a Volksrod, so it may be just fine.
That '20-'25 Model T gas tank looks like an option for the Berry Mini-T too. _________________

As a rule, you will need an adapter/ extender with most bolt on beams/ axles. The Vaughn Bros. have nailed that 1/4 look. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |
