After almost 30 years with a purist vintage 1952 type 1 world it was good for a while to feel free and make something different to myself. My first idea was to make a reasonable beetle with a spirited engine. About three and half years ago I found a -59 project which was dismandled and spoiled, but somehow reasonable to continue with free hands. Chassis was done quite ok, but body was just repaired with badges to be hidden with a thick bondo. The best thing was that it was never been hit or damaged.

I had a plan to fit new disc brakes from CSP for a safety and new pro-street transmission from Rancho to be strong enough.

Then I met propably the best pro for aircooled VW:s and Porches and suddenly I lost my control. 2332 cc torque twister engine with these specs arrived to my gagage two years ago - so I had to be serious after that:

- polished Bugpack 84mm crank +8 dowel lightened flywheel and Chromoly bolt
- Kennedy stage II + 200mm, Kush-Lok
- 5,5 Bugpack H-profile rods, new ARP bolts. Porsche journals
- VW block machined and reinforced, ff,
- 94mm AA cylinder/pistons
- Schadek 30mm oil pump
- Porsche 911 oil squirters
- KS crank bearings
- JPM Raptor PM00806 (263deg at 0.05” , 9.64mm cam lift and 106LC)
- JPM 7075 billet dual taper pushrods
- Scat steel straight cut cam gears
- JayCee no leak tubes
- 1,4 SCAT Pro-Comp 4340 Chromoly rockers
- DRD CNC L7 heads 42x37.5
- MSD Billet T-1, MSD 6AL, MSD Blaster 2
- Dellorto 45 DRLA's with 36 mm venturies
- S-S Sidewinder
- CR 11.05
- wide oil sump, filters, coolers etc.

I had to do the remaining vehicle as city proof as possible, so I choose my style as a Vintage, but in fact it is quite a sleeper. That is why there are no BRM:s or bling blings, but rather standard modest look to hide the real potential. All interior is like the original, colour is -59 fjord blue, rims are smoothies, etc
I was lucky to get a set of a German rack&pinion steering system and with some modifications it feels on the road really good. I can still use the original fuel tank.

I have these pictures as today my beetle is back to registered after 28 years since last days. Still some fine tuning, but it looks and sounds nice!

That's a style I could dig! Really tasteful, and I bet it can burn some rubber. Thanks for sharing.

They sure are! All that is left to complete the illusion is to blacken the polished exhaust bits underneath so that they don't stand out so much. Wink

I bought a license plate for this -59.

Now 6 - 7 looong months to next driving season. Still some minor things to do. Or it depends, if I cannot get those small leakages of gearbox to dry, then we talk about major things... Quite disappoint for Rancho quality!
