So I was thinking that 16 gallons would be nice for long trips. Now I know this does not list a thing in the ad but do y'all think it would fit. I know I would have to open the hood to fill but that's no big deal

You would have to fill it from inside the trunk, meaning your stock fuel filler would be inoperative.
Your spare tire would no longer fit in the trunk.
Your fuel gauge will be useless when it is most important (near empty).
320 miles is a long way to drive in a Thing without stopping.
Other than that, it would be OK.
Save your money, Mondshine |

All true except they sell a new fuel gauge sensor so it compensates for the increased fuel. The spare tire is easy as I could just use a rear bumper mount. I'm trying to plan a long trip and would rather have more fuel in the tank than Jerry cans. |

I recently installed a vintage 60's Beetle tank in my Thing, and I have no regrets.
The new version of this tank is this one.

This tank allows me to completely top it off, without needing to burp it. I think I can carry an extra gallon or so. The vent in the filler neck is hooked up to the charcoal canister, and I have no gas fume issues. The spare tire still fits under the hood, and to me, the tank with its aluminum VW filler cap looks right.
Finally, I do not mind having to pop the hood to fill it, as I already do that with my Beetle. |

Are you saying that there is a fuel sender expressly made for this 16 gallon tank?
What is the part number of this fuel sender? |

JZ-
Be careful about that. The drop box lists a fuel level sender with a part number that indicates that it is for a pre-1968 Beetle, with a mechanical (cable operated) fuel gauge.
That sender, would work with the 10 gallon tank mentioned by Jonny Rock (provided you want to make a new hole in your dash to install a separate mechanical fuel gauge) or you could probably use the electric sender and gauge you already have with that 10 gallon tank, but I have never seen a sender made specifically for the 16 gallon tank.
Your spare tire will fit in the trunk with the 10 gallon tank Jonny Rock described, but not with the 16 gallon tank you want. In other posts, people have detailed problems with the rear spare tire mount, so weigh all of that carefully against a few extra fuel stops during your upcoming trip.
Driving a Thing from full to empty (with 16 gallons of fuel) will take ~5 hours, and that's a long time in a Thing seat without a break.
Good luck, Mondshine

Well I think I'm gonna skip it. I just bought 2 real NATO fuel cans not cheap copies. I will just make due with those |
