Picked this little gem up over the weekend. Guy I bought it from was the second owner and he bought it in 71. It had been sitting in his building since 77. Everything is there except the bumpers. All the interior panels are there but have been recovered with an ugly green. Haven't gotten a chance to really go over every piece, but I know the rear door will need a new latch assemble. Here's a few pics I have right now.

Damn! His barn looks like it is bigger than my whole lot! You could fly RC planes in there! _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

The original color is Turk. Green. The seats and panels have all been redone an ugly green. For now I am going to buff the paint and run the interior as is. Eventually I want to strip it down to the original color. There is a little bit of rust that needs repaired but that's the fun stuff. |

Good job, very nice piece of metal!
Mandrakes, with all due respect, please remember that before the Vanogon goons came along, every single bus driver called a Double Cab a Double Cab. Hearing well-intentioned good bus people accidentally refer to a Double Cab as that Vanogon goon term, is completely embarrassing, as you cannot make the coolest truck cooler by attempting to coolatize it's already coolest name. Please let us rise up to combat this Split Bus phonic failure and return to using the correct and most respected "Double Cab" name. Thank you for your understanding. |

Ok guys, I need a little incite. The original color for the double cab is hiding beneath the ugly exterior paint. Anyone have and tips or known to work methods to strip the paint off to get back to the original? I really don't want to build the truck up with all new rubber, just to take it all off when the time comes for paint. |

There have been a few threads with info on that, but this one seems to be the primary thread from the FAQs. It's long, but informative.
In short, there are a number of products/methods that have yielded good results. Start with weak removers/gentle methods and get a feel for how much stronger you want/need to go.

On the subject of 1963 Double cabs, what engine was this delivered with from the factory? A fresh air 40hp or 1500? |

i just now noticed your comment, and i am completely willing to change the error in my ways. However, back home, in germany where the doppelkabine came from, we commonly shorten the name to DOppelKAbine... DOKA. I very well understand that some people that were born since then have bastardized this term, innocently born from laziness. At my advanced age i can't promise to learn a new trick, but it is under consideration _________________ regards

Sorry its taken so long to get back to this. I bought a bunch of parts from WW and a plan is in motion to do all the rust repair and then have the paint and body work done professionally at a secret top notch paint and body shop. She will be a thing of beauty when finished!! |
