I've been troubleshooting my turn signals, brake lights and emergency flashers and have most of them working but need sage advice to finish.
I've replaced bulbs, wires and connectors and now have the brake lights, all four turn signal lights and the front emergency flashers working. The rear emergency flashers do not work though.
I've checked the FAQ section and the schematics in the turn signal/flasher post make it look like this combination of working/non-working isn't possible. Any ideas are welcome. |

No problem!
Have you run ground wires from each taillight to the battery grounding cable bolt point on the body? 'Tis a must for any bus. VW finally installed such at the factory in 1970 due to all sorts of wacky electrical problems back there. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I have. Both lights are grounded and confirmed with ohmmeter readings. Also, both brake lights work and both rear turn signal lights work so I figured it wasn't a ground issue.
My guess was the 9 prong box, but since the front emergency flashers work, I don't see how the 9 prong box could be the issue. I don't have the internal schematics for the box though. |

Understand they are grounded, but if you do not have a ground wire on each taillight, you are getting a ground by back feeding thru the wiring.
So do you have ground wires installed?? _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Yes. Both have separate ground wires to the body. |

Good! The flasher has to work thru the turn signal. So if you have all four TS working and front ES, think your problem is the turn signal switch itself. Try inspecting and cleaning it with contact cleaner with silicon. If that does not work, time to get a good used TS and install. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Some info here might be useful: highlighted schematic, 9 pin relay, turn signal switch _________________ '71 panel, now with FI

Thanks. Pin 54F on the 9-pin had no output. Problem solved. Time for a new relay. |
