The first time I paid attention to the tire brand was in 1977 on my 1965 VW type 1. They were 5.60 bias Klebers.. |

I bought a 1963 Beetle a few years ago that had been sitting behind a barn since 1968. It looked like it have been hit in the front and someone started to repair it but simply stopped. Anyway, three of the four tires were Continentals. The fourth tire was on the corner that was hit so I assume the tire and rim had been damaged and replaced. I assume they were what came on the car as it had 44,000 miles and a pile of receipts slightly gnawed by rodents dating from the purchase date to February 17, 1968 showing an oil change at 41,000 miles. None of them were for a set of tires. I was so sad that this car was so far gone with such low mileage. But I gave it to a friend who turned it into the show winning volksrod "Das Speedster". |

If you look at the order of brands, Continental and Dunlop are first and second, respectively. Goodyear had a plant in Sweden, so it's possible Swedish-made Goodyears were specified for Swedish-market VWs, which is why they're #8 on the list (note the Finnish poster indicated his car came with Fuldas, which is #3). _________________ Thanks,

I can not speak for a bug, but I obtained a tire that is 14" for an early bus. I posted a while back and Everett thinks it may be OG.
So Continental may be a good bet. |

For what it's worth, DOT didn't exist before 1967. _________________ Thanks,

The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT or DOT) is a federal Cabinet department of the U.S. government concerned with transportation. It was established by an act of Congress on October 15, 1966, and began operation on April 1, 1967. It is governed by the United States Secretary of Transportation. |
