|
|
So...this started right after changing oil cooler seals (which of course implied taking left side tins and generator out), the car will randomly make this deep growling noise for a few seconds and then come back to normal, it seems to be rpm related, it does it both with car stopped or running, first thing I checked was the torque converter to flex-plate bolts but they were tight, it's quite hard to pinpoint the exact source of the noise, but I'm guessing it could be fan or fan-housing related....taking that apart is gonna take more than just a couple hours right?
I guess it could be the generator too, I still have to run it with the belt off...I had a leaking fuel pump, ripped intake gaskets and a burnt choke wire to deal with too so I've been a little busy....sometimes I think my car doesn't really like me |

by the way, what size wrench do you need to hold the generator pulley? some posts in here (and the idiot book) say 24mm, some say 27mm, a 24mm wrench didn't fit, but looks like 27 would be too big?? (didn't have one to try)

did you pop the belt off and check if the sound was still there or not?
I had 2 cars do a moaning sort of sound and it was the small bearing in the generator in both cases. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

The problem is almost certainly in what you worked on immediately before the problem started. |

If you unbolt the generator strap and tilt the generator up you can flip off the belt. Force the generator down tight while you re-bolt the strap for the re-install. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

well, in the end it turns out that there was an unidentified foreign body in the cowling, that was being hit (and disintegrated) by the fan pulley, to be honest it's hard to tell what it was....might have been a screwdriver handle? then the rest of the screwdriver is nowhere to be seen
I haven't driven the car yet but so far everything seems to check out ok |

well I can tell you my 24mm wrench didn't fit the pulley it's like its a little bit over 24
anyway I took the whole generator out, way easier to do it that way when you have clumsy fingers!
now it looks like there's a plugged idle jet |
