New to vw's. I have a choice of two vw's; a 1963 and a 1967. Which one to buy? They are both in good condition.

Buy them both. Where are they located? Show some pictures. Each will have issues, one year only parts, more powerful or weak engine. It goes on and on. so just get both of them and the decide which one you want to keep.

Should I have potatoes or carrots for diner? Should I ask out the skinny chic or the fat chick? Should I wear black shoes or green shoes?

Basically the point is that these cars while being VW's are very different under the skin as well as in appearance. So it becomes a matter of preference and we can't help you decide which you like more.

Then it also depends on so many different aspects of the two cars. What shape are they in, how much are the sellers asking for each car? What comes with each one? How far away is each car? How cooperative is each seller being?

Again, you need to decide which one you like based on the circumstances.

Don't take our word for it- you'll never get a consensus.
If you want 12 volts and big windows- get a '67. If you want a rolling sex symbol, oozing of man-ness that virtually guarantees your position in any position- get the '63.

All depends what you want, the 63 will have more visual character but the later bugs are much nicer to drive

The cars being in similar condition, I'd go for the '63. Old style window frames, nice interior. As Joel says, the 67 will be a better drive, but remember that you are comparing cars that are 50 years old. Don't expect any modern day comforts.

Go with the 1963. Less plastic and is little more valuable and a little more simple. I like the older modles better. I will never by a super bug or a 1968 or newer.

Like what a heater knob and a defrost vent?

I would go with the 63 but i am biased. The 67 will have many single year parts that may be hard to locate or expensive.

67's are cool cause they have one year only things. I have a 67 and its the last year of the old lines and charm. 63 is one of my fav years. As was posted , 67 rides somewhat better as they have the Z-bar on the rear to help keep the swing axle planted and 12 volt electrics. 63 has the smaller windows, straight vent windows, small front signals and small plate light. They are both good cars.

Depends on when in 67 it was made. My dads 67 looks exactly like a 68. It has 4 lug swing axle and the plastic dash pad.
Condition is the main factor. Myself i would be willing to do more work to a 63 if it were in not as good shape as the 67.

To the OP: Your title states "1976". But your first line states "1967".

Which year is it really? There's a much bigger difference from a '76 to a '67 than from a '67 to a '63.

It may have been assembled in late 67 but its classed as a 68.
Everything after July which is when they bring in new model changes is classed as next years model.

sorry what you are describing is not a 67. US 67 have 5 lugs and metal dash with no pad. euro 67's still have metal dash with no pad, but have 4 lugs and discs.

you are describing a 68 not a 67 model year.

I agree with Joel. The 1967 would be a nicer driver. The '63 would have a little more nostalgic look.

Z-bars come into effect when a car is heavily laden. It's not the same thing as an anti-roll bar. Smile

Euro 67s came as follows,

1200 Sparkafer, the base no frills model
1300 de luxe, more trim bigger engine
both the above had 5 lug wheels and drum brakes
1500, the HOT VW with 4 lug wheels and front disc brakes. All had blade bumpers and sloping headlamps, no dash pad but a variety of chrome and trim fitments and colour.

The US only tended to get the larger engine top spec models, ie in 66 just the 1300 in 67 just the 1500...
