Just bought two westfalia campers for pretty cheap. One of the buses has an engine the other doesn't. They both have the same pop-up bed and one has the fridge and the other has just the cooler. Everything is there with them, again except the one is missing an engine. My question is I am new to the air-cooled community and have no idea where to start.

What kind of engine is that and can I fix it up? Also, do you think the orange one will pass inspection?

Thanks guys

Hey Jason,
I don't know where to start but you may need to save your pic.png of the buses to a jpg file. Then read the FAQ's for the forum.

Best of luck!

Yes, in order to post photos, you must first upload them to the Gallery. You do this by clicking on Gallery-->Add Photo and a screen will appear that you fill out with details, as well as select a category (It says "Upload to Category"). There are categories for everything. I guess "Kombi" is what you use for a plain ol' bus, otherwise there is most certainly a category for 68-79 campers, just doesn't refer to them as "Bay Window". Note that there is a size limit on photos (generous one) and you can upload multiple photos at once.

Start by reaching behind you with your right hand and carefully removing your wallet from your pants pocket and gently kissing it goodbye. Very Happy

Remember, fixing things mechanical are easy. Fixing things rusty are an expensive bitch.

Good Luck and keep posting your progress.

You're going to be learning a whole lot very quickly.

Since they both look to be late models its either a 1700cc or 1800cc Type 4 motor.

well, one has a lock in the sliding door panel. so, 74 or later

the other has the <= 76 hood hinge.

so with some detective work we can narrow the age ranges down

or somebody could just tell us what years they are

Nice looking bus. Does he have the gas tank? Anything can be fixed for the right amount of cash. Does the motor turn or is it locked up?

Welcome to the world of bus ownership. Now go buy a bently and start studying!

looking into the windshield from the outside, on the driver's side you'll see the VIN plates. the 3rd digit in the VIN tells you the year. 227xxxxxxx tells you it's a 1977, 224xxxxxxx tells you its a 1974, etc.

On ol' yeller, you are missing some engine tin. Having all your tin in place is very important. Also, I see the decrepit remnants of a Fuel Injection system on the engine, but it is looking very incomplete. Do you know if this yellow bus had a fire? Did you get the rest of the Fuel Injection components?

If I were you I'd start with giving it a nice bath and completely cleaning out that interior. Then sorting through any parts you received with the buses to determine what you have and what you will be needing.

Oh, and I forgot, congratulations on owning 2 sick buses dude!! Please continue to post your progress. This should be interesting, indeed!

What a great project! I'd love to see how these come together. Envy, Envy!
