So I just pick this up off of a coworker because I felt I needed another project. The body is pretty straight. The front and rear aprons are original and undamaged. It has four after market fenders and some dents in the roof. Heater channels are great as well. As far as I know it has all of the pieces to put it back together. Still going through boxes. It has new pan halves and the pan was already stripped so I sent it out to get powder coated. It also came with a narrowed beam and a brand new set of EMPI 5 spokes with tires. Plans are to get it as a running driving car again and sell it.

Still waiting on the pan to get back from the powder coating place. Also trying to decide if I should leave the body the way it is or paint it while its off the pan. If I paint it I've been thinking of goin with hot rod flatz. Any thoughts or ideas?

Hot Rod Flatz has a Desert Tan that is my favorite, but shiny paint might bring the best price if you are actually planning to sell it. Question

While the pan comes together I decided to do a leak down test, head retorque, valve adjust on the engine and get it all cleaned up. All 4 cylinders checked great with less that 15% leakage.

That GEX sticker should give you a major cause for concern. Nothing good ever comes from GEX... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=92079&highlight=gex

Agreed, I was disappointed to see the GEX when I picked up the engine. Trust me I know the horror stories, I'm not new to the game Smile I'm Hoping to have dodged a bullet. If not I will cross that bridge when I get there. So far everything I've checked has not thrown any red flags. The engine will be run up to temp with gauges being checked before going into the car.

littleredwagen: no the VIN is still on the pan.

Man it's been a while since I've updated this. Good news and bad. The good news is that I got her sitting where I like it and a friend hooked me up with some sweet upholstery from an old custom bug. I think it turned out pretty bitchin. The bad is even after checking the engine out, the GEX bullet hit me. Oh well I gambled and lost lol. Luckily it wasn't catastrophic, I was diving it home when a knock developed and by the time I got off the road it was pretty loud. Suspecting a rod bearing, I had it towed back to my buddies shop. Got the engine out and apart. We found out the it was indeed a rod bearing. But the great part was that GEX used a pretty lapped out set of crank and rods with 40 over bearings. The main culprit of the failure however was the fact they also used the incorrect seals for the oil cooler plugging the flow to the oil cooler. Live and learn. The engine is now back together with a new set of crank and rods and correct oil cooler seals, and going in today. Looking forward to driving her again.

Those don't look like any type of actual seal I've ever seen, what they do look like are the plastic plugs that come installed on new parts to keep dust and other contaminates out... they're supposed to be removed prior to the part being installed.

Either way someone at GEX didn't do their job properly which is why GEX has such an "outstanding" reputation.

Hey man, saw your ride at volkstock today. I'm going for a similar stance and rolling the 5 spoke empi's myself. How narrow is your beam and how many splines in the rear?

What is that smaller pulley, on your main pulley, for? I have a 63 engine and it has the same set up.

Thanks. The beam is 4in narrowed with drop spindles and I'm not sure on how many splines. We set it to 18 degrees under stock which I believe is 21-24 degrees. (don't quote me on that) I also have adjustable spring plates. so after we set it to 18deg, I adjusted it a littel more to where I liked where it sat.

The smaller pulley was for if the car had A/C. It can be removed but you will need a stock pulley bolt and washer.
