Hey everyone, Im new here and to the bug world but I'm about to tackle my first "build" I found a (I believe) '65 or '66? dirt track bug. The plans are to get it set up to run autocross and hopefully street legal. I have no idea as of what the internals are. Its been sitting in a barn for over 20 years and the person who had it also didn't know whats in it so it's gonna be a fun surprise.

Cool find! Keep the pics coming. Wanna sell it? I always wanted a vintage stockcar.

Should have cracked them loose while it was still on the trailer Laughing

Id sell it if the price was right haha

yeah I regret not doing it on the trailer for sure. I spent all day yesterday bouncing on the end of a 3 foot pipe on a 2 foot breaker bar and it wouldn't budge. Looks like i'm gonna be cutting those suckers off lol

put it back on the trailer and take to a big boy's tire shop and have them put a 1/2" or 3/4" air impact on it --- problem solved -- -- had to do that a couple of times for the gland nut on the crank --

engine should be your first worry though

I've tried 1/2" impact 3/4" impact 1/2" electric impact, breaker bars, knocking it loose with a hammer and punch. Everything.

A little heat and some PB blaster a few times a week and it should go.

A shop that does tractor trailer wheels has bigger guns with big hoses and really gets the job done.

Well Ive got the engine out of it now. Not knowing what was in it other than one cylinder was down atleast I was expecting the worst on the inside (specially since I noticed the redline on the tach was set at 6750rpm Shocked ) but turns out I was totally wrong! Ive got one head off and it was the damaged side and the damage totaled to... a bent push rod. The pistons and cylinders look almost new in this thing except for some normal carbon on the piston tops. I was hoping for it to be a pretty big engine but it only has 87mm pistons in it Sad and I'm going to assume the crank is just a stock one.

The back seat (fuel tank)

That's awesome. Don't paint it!

Any idea of the history of it? What track it raced at, etc?

Sorry for no updates in a while. Been really busy at work lately. Will finish breaking down the engine tomorrow. Don't worry it won't be getting any paint! It raced in east TN when it was on the track. Not sure the actual track though. It'll be going back together pretty mild as of now. Not sure if it'll get an EJ20 after next years autocross or a bigger bug motor yet Cool

PLEASE make sure you move that oil cooler from the fan shroud. Your engine will thank you.
