Ok guys, where do I start. Im guessing 90% of the metal below the floor, including floor needs replacing. What's the best place to start. Trying to keep measurement points and straight in mind. My first bus resto, not to original, but want a solid ride. Thanks in advance |

We've also got a 67 and faced the same dilemma; we started by "stopping" first as in replacing the front brakes from the soft lines outward with all new parts. It's a driver, so the priority is different than starting with body work first.
Some great advice I've seen on here before; get it running and stopping first, then begin the metal work. That way you don't find yourself years down the road, not actually down the road, but stuck with a garage full of VW Bus parts and lost interest. |

I would agree with that but if the bus is as rusty as he states then it may not be safe to drive until at least some of the structural work is done. Pics would tell the story.
To the OP, when you get the pics on your computer, click on "Gallery" above. Then upload pics and beside each picture will be a forum code. Copy and paste that here.
I'm happy for you, good luck with your bus! _________________ "A rolling bus gathers no rust." |

Yeah, she's not a runner lol. Every thing needs rebuilding/refurbished. So I was gonna strip it, do the body then the gear as it goes back in.
I just don't know if I should start with cross members, floor supports, jack points first? |

Well, the obvious starting place is to compile a comprehensive list of what you will be needing. Having the parts on hand even before you begin dismantling is a plus. There will be more stuff to replace as you get deeper into it. But having the bulk of the big, obvious stuff will help.
Most guys start with the cargo floor and work up and out. The middle is where the fiddly bits are that will cause the most head scratching, swearing and extra parts ordering. Once you get past that area you will be a journeyman and nothing will seem hard or even impossible. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Ah fellow BCer.
Well you started in the right place...here.
Ask questions and listen to the answers.
Look at what others have done with their builds that started in a similar shape as yours.
Where to start usually depends on how bad it is now and how good you want it in the end. That's how I look at it anyways. I had an idea of what I wanted my bus to look like when finished and then planned how to get there.... I am not there yet.
Good luck, post lots of pics, Gordo. _________________ Everybody Dies....Some Never Live.

|
|
First thing you need is plastic bags and labels. You MUST stay organized. Also, a digital camera. Take a picture of everything and even put it in the bag with everything labeled. this will save you a lot of time later and also money. And money is free speech, the supreme court tells me. So, plastic bags are free speech. Or you can buy beer with free speech. i don't know.
So back to being organized. First start with the bags and such. Then begin by reading. There are lots and lots of threads that will show you just what to do. Read and read and read.
Buy only top quality sheet metal replacement parts. if you have read, you will see very early on who is making the best products. Don't skimp, the time spent on poor parts is far more expensive.
Cut and weld metal. Have at it. |

Been a while, no progress yet lol, and still havent tried wrapping my head into getting pics into gallery. I did wash the moss and fungus of the bus today. Soon to be pushed into garage.
But in the mean time, the roof is has large dents in it, about 2' good at front, and 3' at rear. Should I try to get it straight, or cut and replace the roof section between the front and rear curved sections. Basically the "straight " section. |

Sweet, looks like og paint. that'll buff out.
Just pop the roof dents up. Look into 'shrinking' the metal.
How is the interior? |

Yup og paint. But I think there will be too much repair work to save it. She's gone below the waist, floor structure likely going to need every piece replaced.
I thought about trying the shrinking on the roof. Maybe get it Chery red and push her out on a really cold snowy day lol, twang. |

I'm sure it has rusty rockers and floor and lower bits such as

outriggers-Rockers-jackpoints-cargo floor-doglegs-frontfloor. |
Many people have done nice blendings.
That is very strong og paint, which is more desirable than a re-paint, lucky you.
more pics! |
