you must be right, thanx ! stupid me Embarassed
sticking my finger down it, I immediately had a big chunk of grease on it...I can't see the fitting on the steering link, but it must be somewhere underneath the old goo.
to my apology, this is the first in 4 BDs I owned that has a front floor at all, so this hole is new to me Laughing

Thanx Everett ! What is the date/edition of your manual ? I have read those manuals many times and just looked through my July 1953 ( German language) and the pic shown in your manual - it isn't there !!! there is a pic
concerning filling the steering gearbox instead, and the hole isn't showing.

the lubrication chart on the last page it clearly lists the front drag link end to be greased.

The picture above is from this manual - 6/54 English:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/june54bus.php

You are right - the 7/53 German manual has a different photo

also note how the 7/53 German one lists 8 schmiernippel, where the 8/54 English one lists 10

thank god, there's a few billion nipples out there... Wink
I have no idea what either the German or English manual are referring to.
my count would be at least 15 for front suspension, not counting the pedal assembly and other stuff. rear axle has grease nipples on the hand brake cables too.

I just thought about my comment and if you think about that grease job from the view of a driver ( not a restorer or mechanic), then of course the floor pan will cover most of the axle nipples , and not showing the front drag link grease holein the manual, it leaves you 8 outer grease points without removing the floor pan. then, where did they add the 2 Export ones ?
Fragen über Fragen... Laughing

I don't know where they got 8 or 10, there are WAY more.

Off the top of my head, at least 19.

One example:
What's with the top photo here - They have 2 arrows when there are 4 fittings right there. 4 per side is 8 alone just for the A-arms:
