I should have checked the seal first. The rubber scraper had separated from its metal sleeve. I'm talking with the Scat salesman who I ordered it from. Hopefully he'll make it right. I've got it temporarily fixed for now.
The breather was still getting a lot of oil in it before the new catch bottle so the effort was worth it.
Maybe someday I can have someone go through the whole motor and make it right. That will have to wait as I'm a broke bum ATM. _________________ Brian H.

I didn't want to start a new thread because this one was very close to the problem. I don't know squat about sand seals. I read through this thread and perused others on this forum. A buddy has a 1600dp in his bus. A local "Guru" was adamant that a sand seal was a wonderful thing to have and built my friend an engine accordingly. The engine is a couple of years old, not a DD and low miles. The pulley slings oil around the engine bay at a horrific rate. If I have read correctly, (1) a sand seal will leak if the engine is not vented enough? (2) it may have been installed without the slinger? I guess first step would be to remove the pulley and inspect. What to look for? This will be my 1st SS experience. Felling kinda noobish after 30+ years in the hobby.
Thanks for any advice. |

May have installed the seal, with a pulley with the stock type spiral cut instead of the smooth shank. May have installed the seal holder without the seal. Even without the slinger, if the seal is in right, it should not leak at all. If it's slinging oil around, there is definitely something wrong. _________________ Richard

yup, the rubber is known to separate from the metal on the seal itself too. It's hard to see but the rubber will ride out on the pulley and open up a gap.
Spacing your pulley on the crank is also important. With my Scat pulley, without a spacer the pulley goes in too deep making the seal ride on the dished surface instead of the flat. That will ruin the seal quick. _________________ Brian H.

So the pulley should have a smooth shank and not a spiral? If no spacers were used the seal may be shot. |

yes possible.
Crankcase pressure will supposedly push oil out there but I've only had oil come out because of a problem with the seal itself. I have a 1835 kit and wouldn't describe my motor as wild and I think there's plenty of pressure in my system to push oil out as soon as it gets a chance. Yet my seal isn't leaking right now. My pushrod tubes at the case are, but not the sand seal. I think sand seals are great when they aren't causing oil leaks.lol _________________ Brian H.

Thanks, I guess we'll remove the pulley and seal and see what the builder really did. |
