Hello everyone! I just recently purchased a 71 squareback. I drove the car 150 miles to my house! It's pretty solid but needs a lot of TLC. I have several cars and I am always working on something. This car is going to be my daily driver for now.
FI was already removed and replaced with 34ICTs. Tuned them but car still seems sad. Plan to rebuild and jet them soon.
Stock rims were bent beyond repair and were replaced with EMPI gasser 15x5.5 with 25 offset on 165/80/15s. Car seems to sit too high for my liking though.
After a month I have already learned a lot and will attempt to answer any questions.

Post will be updated when I make progress!
PICS!

Nice!

I'm guessing neither your clock nor odometer are working?

Welcome. That's a nice looking 71 you've got there. Cool
Spend some time looking around the forum, as I'm sure there's some info you can use to help your car run better, drive better, stop better, and make it even more enjoyable. Very Happy We're also here to help, if you get stuck on something, or just need a little kick in the butt to get motivated. Wink

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone.
I took the speedometer apart and a pin with 2 cogs is worn down. I took it out for now but I plan to get the gauge working properly one of these days. Odo stopped over 3 years ago according to title with 87k miles and engine has a type 1 dipstick. That is all I have pieced together so far. The clock only works when it feels like it.
No plans this week since the car is still running strong and I have to reassemble a 1200 T1 sandrail to sell it, but I will make a list to keep motivated.
To do:
Replace front seat pads and all seat covers
Fix fuel vapor leak into cabin/charcoal canister leak
Reassemble ventilation/heater system
Fix AT leak(s)
Make fiberglass heater vent covers and nice headliner clips
Replace damaged weatherstrips and window scrapers
Unpaint various pieces previous owner painted ford? blue

A few Type-3 unique tips for safety and reliability:
- check the top torsion arm endplay. It is adjusted at the top right side. This is routinely neglected and creates both a safety hazard, extra wear, and sloppy steering.
- Check overflow/vent at the gas filler. This is often rotted and will let water and dirt into your fuel system. Also check the fat hose to the tank-- they often weep and to fix it you need the thin rubber sleeve inside replaced.
- as with any car this age, replace soft brake lines if there is any sign of wear... not just on the outside, but in brake behavior.

Most people just take out the charcoal filters/cap off the vents as they are always plugged up and ineffectual anyway. Your new wheels are call 'gas burners' because they look like a stove top burner.

Why do engines/cars that have the moustache bar also have a rear mount that isn't used?

Tram says it was because it was used on the production line to aid installation of the engine/trans assembly, so they kept it even on later cars.

Have not had a chance to do much maintenance yet but sitting on wire frames sucks. Started with the passenger seat just in case. Feel free to ask questions or comment. First time I have ever done upholstery and took me 4 hours for the seat. Used tweed sand covers from TMI and new foam pads which didn't seem to fit quite right. 10.5oz Canvas was used instead of burlap over frame. Time for beer!

Welcome and great find. Love the choice on wheels, goes well with car colour.
I have a 71 Auto also and had issues with it running smoothly. Recently had carbs rebuilt, now running a bit lean but almost got it where I'm happy.
Good luck and keep the updates coming.

Update: added electronic ignition and 3ohm resistance coil. Went with compufire, but doesnt seem any different from the chinese knock off.(i have the $40 pointless on my 1200.) general igniton tune up as well.
I have made progress although its poorly documented. Next things are new door seals/scrapers and jetting the carbs!

Heres a quick update...
replaced a leaky fuel filler hose and kinked filler vent
re jetted and rebuilt carbs...cant remember jet sizes but they were recommended
painted some tins
auto trans vacuum lines were split. Used some 6mm silicone i had lying around.
attempted to bring life back to air filters
fixed cyl 1 spark plug with an insert. used a borrowed tap and a ratchet
set the valves..cyl 4 valves sit low. almost unable to adjust
compression check! a-ok
Replace oil cooler seals...which were incorrect and blocking 95% of oil flow.
replaced oil cooler seals again because one missed the first time. oops.

Are your fan shroud outlets plugged up? Otherwise you lose all cooling air pressure.

Alright so after tuning and syncing my newly jetted icts...along with the help of my dad. Well he did most if it and I read him Ruffturns post(because I work on fuel injection); the square runs much better! Cyl 1 is still kind of weak from not firing but hopefully it will build up some carbon and be ok. Car starts fine cold and idles smooth! misses significantly less as well.
Jets swapped: 52 to 55 idle. 130 to 140 main. f78 to f6 emulsion. 160 to 170 air. Total cost about $100 from aircooled.

I do have a few questions if anyone is willing...
Will the car ever run without missing with 34 icts? or is it not adjusted quite right. I did use a bubble sync tool, and checked it after driving for sync as well. I would estimate idle to be around 950rpm.

Does any one have a problem with their flasher sticking on? mine will fix itself if I pull the ememergency flasher for a few seconds.

Replaced a whimpy looking spdt starter relay and 16ga harness which was zip tied to the starter. Never again will I be in the parking lot starting my square with a screwdriver!
