Today the square decided to die on the freeway. Initial inspection seemed like engine over heated. Oil was full and just changed last week. Car still runs but just barely and makes loud metal noises from the engine. More updates upon further inspection. After just getting the car running for two weeks this is kind of a bummer. _________________ 71 squareback (1904 A/T)

Pull the valve covers and check rockers, clearances & heights. You probably have a bad valve, camshaft, lifter or bearing. "How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engine" by Tom Wilson from Amazon will give you a lot more expertise/confidence to dig into the engine. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Yep...sounds like you might have dropped a valve or valve seat. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Pulled the valve covers and everything seems OK. Plugs are black and cylinder 1 plug had black on it due to it leaking pressure. I don't know if the car was running way too rich before or after it messed up. Its a good thing I pulled the engine because every bolt was loose enough to remove by hand; including the torque converter bolts and mustache bar bolts to the frame and case. Oil seemed fine with not much metal. Thanks for the info on the valves. I will look into it.

I pulled the heads off and they look pretty messed up. the left head has cracks in cyl 3 and 4. The right head looks different and has a really messed up valve seat.
Can anyone give me further information on these?

It turns out my universal case had 90.43 pistons and a stock stroke making it a 1776. I ended up ordering some DRD L3 heads and a full flow setup. Time to clean some parts while I wait for the heads. I dont plan to do a full rebuild unless compression is low.[/list] _________________ 71 squareback (1904 A/T)

My poor square is still sitting without an engine so....time for an update
Installed drd l3 heads
Acquired, de rusted, and painted all heater/fresh air components.
Added a full flow oil system
Wire-brushed and repainted various parts not blue.
Replaced torque converter seal and repaired converter groove with a sleeve
Replaced 30A generator with 55A alternator to add a sound system
Replaced various seals and gaskets
Fixed holes in fan shroud from people screwing in a puller too far.
Pic is just a test fit. Oil filter is only bolted to the tin to keep it out of the way.

Its been a while since I have had an update...mostly because my square wouldn't run right without a full rebuild. (idle oil pressure low and low compression)
Going to install new 74mm chromoly crank, engle 110 cam and lifters, new piston set and I beam 4" rods. Once everything is finished I should have a 1903 ready to go for a long time.

Engine build is complete! Everything went smoothly (as it can go) from all the excellent information here!! Going to re jet and keep the baby webers for now. Also was able to add a t3 oil filler tube and modify the automatic flexplate to fit the 8 pin crankshaft.
Will update after engine break in. Cant wait!

I like that flexplate holder. I'm borrowing that idea when it comes time to reinstall mine. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

The engine runs...it was an all day ordeal but quite fulfilling. The mini stroker sounds much beefier than the 1776 Thanks to my dad to idling the engine for 30 mins to break in the engle 110. Carbs are not right so car is not on the road yet.

The mystery of the car dying at random times is solved...hopefully. Apparently my facet 3.0psi fuel pump is actually a standard 6.0 psi v8 one. Luckily I guessed this was the issue long ago and had already ordered a regulator and chinese stainless fittings.
The car drives really well off the idle circuit and has no comparison to the underjetted tired 1776.
Once the formagasket dries on my regulator my dad and I are going to really fine tune the carbs.
Right now jets are 150 main, 170 air corrector, and 60 idles in the weber 34s. Will post updated jets if we find a better combination.
This seems to work well with the current build of:
74 crank
110 cam
90.5 pistons
L3 heads
Stock size exhaust
Might upgrade to L5 heads if I get another engine for the L3s to go on.
I have a lead on a late square that got pushed out of the garage because the ladys husband died. Will post a thread with pics when I get a look at it. _________________ 71 squareback (1904 A/T)

My gen light is on and its killing me...I also have low voltage reading on my dakota digital multi gauge about 3-4v lower than battery. Tomorrow is multimeter day...and probably wire corrosion removal/replacement day... Im sure my weller soldering iron will be happy.
Will post the places where voltage drops and the largest drop points.
Also should note the alternator is most likely perfectly fine. It had no problems and sat in a box in the garage while the engine was apart. Not to mention its basically brand new. _________________ 71 squareback (1904 A/T)

My dad decided to test drive the car on the freeway at 10pm and the coil died..compufire garbage.
Test drive two was successful. Took the car to 90mph up a pretty good hill.
Still working on jetting. Head temps run a little over 400 up steep hills so going to try larger mains.
Oil temp seems to go between 185-211. Going to wrap exhaust by oil filter to see if it changes.
Svda dizzy on the way, 009 is worthless think its causing falling on face syndrome from a stop.
150 miles and really like how the car drives. Definitely need to check steering and suspension now that the car isnt slow.No issues with auto trans. No leaks after sleeve and seal on converter either.

New svda and some other goodies. Engine bay is really getting cleaned up...especially compared to the blue machine and coors coil. I really need to paint my cap not red.
Also.. Gen light wire from alt is getting .23v which is not nearly enough to make the light go off. Not really sure why but battery charges fine so for now it stays un fixed. Will add to list of things to fix after 500mi break in.

Took apart steering column to find horn short. Turns out the turn signal switch was loose for so long the plastic ring had completely worn away. So waiting for a replacement for that.
Wrapped exhaust with fiberglass to help keep heat from leaking into the filter.
Washed the car for the first time in half a year!

Have you had the alternator tested. I only say that, as it sounds like a bad diode in the rectifier bridge.
Just because it was good 6 months or a year ago, doesn't mean something wasn't bad when you tore it down. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
