I'm thinking about restoring a 1965 to 69 912 on a budget. There are a few cars for sale minus the motor. If I rebuilt the body and installed a vw motor initially to reduce costs, would the type 4 or beetle motor be compatible ?
Thanks for any advice

In the grand scheme of things, the difference in price from using a used, good running 912 engine and using a VW engine + the needed mods to make it work will only be a small portion of your project. What are you figuring for your budget?

If you go with the VW engine which will bolt in ok but the clutch and flywheel may be different, then consider a 74mm stroke VW engine which is what the 912 was. With dual carbs and a similar cam it would make similar power around 90 hp! My VW bus engine is like that!

Found this link for you! http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/cooling/fit/912.shtml The Type 4 Engine was apparently used in the 912E Cars.

The challenge is finding the 912e specific bits to perform the swap!
As only 2000 or so were available stateside you can imagine how many are still around nearly 30 yrs later.
Cool

Either will work. Out of the box the T4 (1.7L, 1.8L and 2.0L) have near double HP of a stock T1 engine. They are more costly to modify and rebuild. You'll have to make or adapt engine compartment cooling tin. Not sure what you consider a budget rebuild as Porsche parts (even used) are not cheap.
