So I'm always looking at the next thing for my Thing and building a stroked motor is on the to do list. I'm new to vw engine building and don't want to screw this up.
I know if I build a stroker like a 84 stroke the engine will be wider but will I need to do any engine bay mods? Will a 84 stroke fit fine?

Depends on how it's assembled. Keep a nice tight deck and run the correct rod length to avoid having to run to thick of cylinder shims, and you can have a near stock width engine.

x2.
Run "B" stroke pistons and connecting rods to match and it can be about the same as stock. Search the Performance Forum for more specifics.
