I have started a buggy project about 2 months ago,(not sure of buggy type) I am to the point of fitting the body to the pan and hood to the body.
When I get the hood in place there is a good 3/8" gap on both sides of the hood where it should meet the fender. Has anyone experienced this and how do I fix it? This is the best picture I have right now.

Welcome to the Samba.
You may be able to pull the edges of the hood out to fill gap.
If you want to fill the gap with something, go to a upholstery shop and have them make a piping (like what is around the edge of a seat) only larger.
Depending where you are, Tom Thompson "Tijuana Customs" in Long Island, New York can make something for you. He knows buggies.
If gap was less I would use the fender beading for a VW Bug. _________________ Joseph

I have to agree that it might actually pull together when bolted up, check this in mock-up before final assembly. Pull it together slowly and evenly, use washers and do it in the sunshine for warmth if thats possible?
Severe cases of shrinkage will require some build-up of your choice of glass, cloth, resins and fillers.
And there's no reason to go find someone to make up custom "piping", normal VW fender welting is all that is supposed to go there. _________________ Boston Bob E.

Have you tried the body on the pan with those seats?
I think your head might be well above the windshield. Maybe not...just asking.
And to answer your question....you should easily be able to snug up 3/8" of space. |

After I read this I put the seat in and tried it out and looking straight ahead I'm looking thru the middle of the windshield. Ive never been in another buggy so I don't know what is the correct height but it seems fine to me. |

Wow..thats great. My seats are usually about 1" or so off the floor and I am looking out the top third of the windshield. |

try to assemble the car completely. The gap will change over age. The 'hood ' has been separated from the body & the fenders are pulling apart. Piping or fender welting will fill the gap. Almost any upholstery shop could do this for you. If it bothers you still, masking tape the hood & apply filler to the body. As it starts to set, lift off the hood & sand the filler until you are happy with the gap. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Good job on the seats. I think you will be happy with them. My butt like some additional padding. Both my buggies have seats like those. I think that the gap will close up nicely with some bolts and fender washers. _________________ My wife said I never listen to her.

Wow...you are so lucky that you fit in that seat set up. If it was me I would be catching bugs in my teeth on every drive.
You can see how much lower the seats were on my Deserter and I was still looking out the top of the windshield:
And on my manx I was at the top third of the windshield even with them this low:

Nice wheels!!!!
What is the width on the front ones??
I have a set of 8 inch Welds in the back and want to switch my fronts to chev lug pattern and Weld Wheels.
I have some 185/60-15's on my 3 1/2 inch wide Centerlines but I really need some 5 inch wide wheels for them. _________________
