Hi all. First post, please excuse any faux pas. I am a German car tech, mostly retired and now on the management of things. I specialized in Audis mostly, and mostly newer ones.

One of my customers from my tech days has brought me an MG kit car. Low miles, very nice, but had been sitting too long. I figured out the no start quick enough ( power wire for the coil had fallen off ) but the car was obviously dumping fuel. I suspect a stuck float, but some quick search on the carb in question ( Solex TC1C ) didn't lead me to any easy to find rebuild kits and not very much in the way of positive reviews.

So how in the heck do I identify what engine I have, and then identify what carb I need for my use? I am looking for something that will hold a tune very well, robust, low end over high RPM. The owner of the car is not very performance oriented, and I can't imagine going fast with the pedals squeezed together like they are…

TIA!

Post up some pics. Normally the engine number stamped under the generator stand will id the engine, but pics will help us figure out modifications done to it.

Soooo.. I don't see a code stamped on the engine. I did, however, find this sticker:

This is the intake:

And this is the car:

Any advice?

As an aircooled newbie, it would best for you to put a stock intake manifold and 1bbl carb back on it. It looks like it's a dual port, with a generator and an aftermarket intake. There's not much to tell from those pics.

What you have there looks to be a Remanufactured 1600 Type 1 with a generator and dual port. As mentioned there is a number stamped below the generator stand. If you pos that we can be more specific unless it's a total universal new case with no ID. You also have an aftermarket progressive center section manifold. They are the hardest carbs to tune for this application. If you are good at tuning carbs it still may take 8 hours or more. Also, I agree and suggest a stock 34mm carb and manifold. Aircooled.net also has the Tech articles to help you tune either of them. Here is what you need to get it going.

Thank you very much gentlemen. Is the stamping supposed to be rearward facing or facing the side of the engine?
