Nope it is still overheating. fan wasn't coming on so he jumped that and drove it with the fan on high it still overheated. So he is staying the night there and is going to wait until they open in the morning. I'll post up tomorrow when he finds out what the issue was. I guess he gets to stay in the westy the first night _________________ Ethan Dunlap

Hmm the seller ought to be able to speak about the issue eh? With the fan on and still overheating points to something being worked on or changed recently or the seller could not have been driving it. Is enough water hitting the temp sender to turn the fan on? And is the belt turning the water pump? Its back to basics at this point. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

Well as it turns out, neither he nor I knew how to bleed/burp the radiator. He followed directions I found online, which where wrong. (I ran phone support till 4AM my time searching thesamba as well as google.) I talked to him earlier today and he woke up at NorthWesty and they had him back on the road within just a few minutes by bleeding the air out. He posted these pictures and this note:
These guys are HERO's!!! So Westy starts overheating in the passes outside Seattle. I got a tow to North Westy last night and replaced the thermostat by flashlight but couldn't get the air out of the system... Nick and Glenn at North Westy saved my day!!! Thanks Guys Back on the road!!
but the story continues, he was about 30-45 minutes into the drive away from North Westy and back to Dallas when it started overheating again. When I got off the phone with him he said he was about to call the guy's up at North Westy for advise. I am still waiting for an update. _________________ Ethan Dunlap

Hmm. At least he is in a huge vanagon community to sort the van. If it does NOT have the Subaru coolant flow correction I suspect a lot of guys here could tell from a pic. Was the fan kicking on when it overheated? If I were him I would be glad I'm in Seattle and get it sorted before heading out. I know, genious advice, eh? Was it a FACTORY Subaru thermostat he put in there? If not, he is guaranteed problems. There is a ton of information on this problem, and I have replaced many aftermarket thermostats which caused overheats in the Subaru.

For what it's worth I dealt with a similar problem with my 2.2 powered westy. Fan wasn't turning on and it was overheating after a short drive. The fan wouldn't turn on because the radiator wasn't getting warm due to a big air bubble keeping the coolant from moving. Did you lift the front of the van, keep high rpms and open the front bleed screw once the temps warm up? That was my problem, just wasn't bleeding it right. You might try that again, maybe not all the air is out?
Oddly enough, I've had a couple times recently where the temp climbed and started overheating. I opened the heater core by just turning the heater on and the temps dropped to normal. Has your buddy just tried that? |

Some more advice, if that motor got real hot even once someone should verify for sure that the head gaskets weren't damaged before he leaves Puget Sound area. It takes very little time being hot to damage head gaskets and cylinder head surfacing in a Subaru, and SVX motors aren't something I would want to have torn down in nowhereville Wyoming. Subaru specialists abound in western Washington and to have verification would be cheap piece of mind for his travels.

I'll chime in quickly on this one. I oversaw buildout of an H6 3.0 that gave us fits with random overheats. Eventually the problem was solved thru northeastern vanaguru Dennis Haynes. He realized that 1. the coolant hoses to the radiator were flipped. So the coolant was going the wrong way through the radiator and making it impossible to bleed. And 2. The van needed a non-stock thermostat that opened at a cooler temperature than stock.
In short, check the coolant hose routing and try a cooler tstat if you can. Hopefully your motor's not toasted. |

Any chance the water pump isn't flowing coolant? I'm not familiar with Subaru's or swaps, just trying to offer another potential problem. |

It's always great when someone chimes in to offer "another potential problem". Heh!!
Any update on this? I'm headed to Seattle tomorrow and if there are any weird tools or parts (buddy is parts guru at my Subaru dealer), let me know if I can bring anything to the party.
