2004 Jetta AC making bad noise when on

My 04 jetta sounds like it is going to throw a rod or lock down when AC is on when I turn it off sounds norma.l took it to mech they said it needs new compresser but AC works great cant afford what they want to replace it.

So, what is the question?

You either replace the dying compressor, or lose AC when it does seize. And do hope that it doesn't take out the serp belt.
