|
|
My oil return line (braided 10 AN with red/blue fittings)from my turbo is routed slightly up over the 2.0 Subaru motor in the picture. Do I need to pull the oil pan and install the return line downward sloping into it or will the motor work fine the way it is? I know the hot oil needs to get away from the turbo quickly. The exhaust is from Outfront Motor sports. I'm trying to get this up and running before I spend more $$ on braided lines and such.
My bumper is about 1 inch away from the exhaust but still fits this motor / turbo combo - I know the paint won't last long.
Thanks,
Ken

that slight up turn in braided line shouldn't be a problem. What's that a 6AN? about 3/8 line? I wouldn't be THRILLED with it, I'd like to see it go straight down, but I can't see how it would hurt.
The most important thing you have to do is make sure the return oil goes back into the pan at the highest point in the pan. you can't have oil in the pan blocking the return. |

Thanks for the good news I'll keep moving ahead. The return line goes to the OEM return on the back of the head. This is a factory JDM turbo motor. |

Since this is a work in process I would find a point on the engine for the drain that doesn't have the rise in it. If the oil doesn't drain away fast enough it will cause oil to leak into the turbo. Do it right the first time. _________________ Jerry...

Yes. I was just going to say, going to the valve cover seems wrong. To to the oil pan. put a 45 6-an Connection, 90 if you have to, and run it to the oil pan. If there is no provision on the pan, make one.
It has to be AT THE TOP of the pan. |

Good points, looks like putting a return into the oil pan would keep the turbo from potentially leaking oil. I can't route the line any other way to remove the rise in it. I'll add it to the list of things to do. It's a 10 AN line.
Thanks,
Ken

Every Subaru turbo I have and have seen has a 5/8ths or -10 return line.
Anything smaller could cause problems.
If I were you I would route that return as straight down as possible. Going up hill is just asking for trouble.
I use push-loc hose and fittings for my oil filter and turbo return. It's not as pretty but is less than half the cost of the fancy stuff.
Mine is a VW engine but I am using the Subaru RHB5 turbo and have never had a problem with oil draining with the routing I use to the 3/4 valve cover.
As you can see in the pic it is almost a straight shot down and is 5/8ths hose off the stock drain slip fitting.

I just put on my new Outfront Motor Sports oil pan and plumbed in the turbo return line. Thanks for the heads up that I needed to change my line.
