Ideally, I would like to use a split case transaxle in my car, but I've never driven one. First, I'm concerned that the non-synchronized gears will be a big pain. 2nd, I'm concerned that I'll have to pick a cam that will work with the gearing of a split case transaxle. Comments anyone?
Cheers,

For a tuned small displacement engine the stock split case gearing sucks. The big problem is the 0.82 4th gear. Porsche did use a 0.89 4th on the 1300 model and that's what VW did use on the first tunnel case.
I know there was a small production of 0.93 gears in Sweden during the 50's and I know a couple of brits (Paul and Fez) who made their own third and fourth. So there has been some kind of production af alternative gearing in the past. Currently I do not know anyone who offer such parts for sald though.
I would be very interested If someone were to make 0.89 4th gears. _________________ __________________________________________ |

i'd be interested in a shorter 4th as well.
as a slight aside, does anyone know the shaft spacing on a split case box?
my thinking being, if another gearbox with the same shaft spacing can be found, it might be possible to cut and splice suitable 4th (and 3rd) gears onto vw centres. |

I think only 1st gear is non-syncro on a splitcase trans.

The very first VW's had a non-syncro transmission also called a crash box.
Was a fun job shifting. |

A split case have more like 3 gear + overdrive....
With the original 36hp engine it works quite well, i think.
From zwitter and up, its only 1. that is non syncro. Rest is ok. But they dont tolerate much extra power, I have heard that people have destroyed them with a 1600. _________________ I got a historic car, every scratch got a history...
