Hey all, quick question.

Does anyone know of a firewall/engine bay only wiring harness?

My 56 bug with a Type 4 conversion has a rats nest for the wiring in the engine bay with multiple splices etc. and I am trying to clean things up.

The wiring is sound throughout the car it just looks like crap in the engine bay and I would love to get all new wiring back there without having to buy an entire harness.

Any and all help is appreciated.

No one makes an OEM style engine bay harness, but factory wiring in the engine compartment is very minimal

From memory: oil light, generator main wire, charge light, license light wire and maybe one or two wires I'm forgetting

The problem here is that there is no firewall-back harness unless you consider only the tail light wires. It's more like tail lights to front harness which runs the length of the body to the switches in the trunk.

I agree though, it would be nice if someone would offer harness sections like the tail lights to switches section and the headlights to switches section as two kits. $300 is a lot of money to spend if you really only need the rear half of it.

In the absence of a firewall back wiring harness what type or brand of wire are you guys using when you need to make repairs/splices back there?

VW wires. Yup, just post a WTB ad in the classifieds and get a good used wiring harness to cannibalize for wires you need. Look for ads where someone is parting out an early Ghia or Beetle.
Also look thru the oval forum for anyone restoring an oval and yanked the wiring harness out. Then contact them....

The wires deep in the loom will be like new.
