After a several year break from the VW world (two layoffs and 20K in vet’ bills), it’s time to have my machinist do his magic on my heads.
My goal is to build a reliable, drivable vintage speed engine that mimic’s a Porsche 356 1600 Super. To that end I’ve purchased a Porsche crank and rods, 82.5 mm cylinders, Super spec Zenith carbs, 1.4:1 Speedwell ratio rockers, and bare Okrasa repro heads. My biggest concern is making sure the heads, rockers and cam all work together. Please tell me if this is the correct way to go about it.
1) Explain goals to head porter. He will determine correct port sizes.
2) Purchase/install valve springs/retainers that will work with lift/RPM requirements.
3) Obtain flow data once porting is complete.
4) Go to cam grinder (Dema Elgin), and have him grind cam that fits goals/hardware.
Does this make sense? Should I do anything differently (e.g. consult with the cam maker earlier in the process)?
Cheers,

Sounds like a great engine!
I take it you are using Okrasa heads, or? My 2 cents from the top of my head:
If I remember correctly the Porsche 1600 Super has rather large valves, I think it will be hard to cram such big valves into Okrasa heads. However I would try to get in at least 32 mm exhaust and 35,5 mm intake valves (as the VW 1600 cc type 1 engines had).
Why lock yourself to the 1,4 ratio rockers? Isn't it better to start with the cam guy and see what he suggests?
If you are mimicing the Porsche 1600 Super why not use such a cam (is it possible with some modification?) or just duplicate its grind.
Regarding the order of doing things I think its not a sequencal thing rather a collaboration/discussion between the cam and the head guy. It all goes togehter!
In any case I look forward to follow your project! Perhaps some inspiration to my "next" engine _________________ __________________________________________ |
