Ok all you Hobart 140 welders, wondering what settings you find best for your sheet metal work. Slowly but surely patching away on a '74 vert.... Just curious!

on my 74 baja bug i usually use about 2 on the v and about 35 to 40 on the wfs. just make sure you have a really good ground. make sure to let it cool after welding for so long.

I use 2 and ~40 for 20 gauge. I use 1 and ~30 for anything lighter.

Are you using 0.024 gauge wire or the larger 0.030? I usually am good with 1/30 with the .024 on sheet metal (I have a slightly lower power Hobart Handler 135) Hobart has that handy chart inside the door of the welder - i think it is dead on:

I use .024 with 75/25 mix on anything lighter than 16 gauge.

I use the 135 as well but I find that my wire speed always ends up about 20% slower than indicated on the chart. I use the .023, w/ C25 mix primarily on sheet metal.

Next question, where does everybody get there sheet metal? I live in the Atlanta area and was lucky enough to find a sheet metal facility that sells their leftovers, scraps way cheap. You just have to go through the bins and hope they have the gauge you need. Usually don't have a problem as when I find some 20 I buy a bunch. Try to fab my own when I can to save $ but sometimes I have to order replacement pieces depending on how complicated the piece is. Learning as I go!

I often use old VW metal...doors, hoods, roof etc. It's the right gauge and easy to source. The other upside is that sometimes you get lucky and there is a compound curve built into your scrap that you may be able to use. I've heard some other folks using old appliance sides, but again gauge is the issue.
