I was recently considering trading my aging (06) mini in for a luxury sedan. I stumbled onto a a 2012 Infiniti g37? For a great price it looked great but I had this feeling I wouldnt want this car when it's 9yr old like my mini... It hit me that most of the old infinities I see around look really dated and kind of ugly now although I would have said Differently when they were new. To me a luxury car should be like a a black wool suit.
As long as it's in good condition you should be able to valet park a luxury car without embarrassment regardless of age.

Lexus and Infiniti I think are the worst at this.

What new cars do you think are trendy and which timeless?

Agreed, but I think that's more about personality than anything else.

Look at the "new" Beetle there - it's much less interested that the original "new beetle" and why? Because it is basically a watered down, lacking personality, version of the original new beetle.

It makes compromises everywhere in style so it doesn't offend.

Be bold, be novel, be INTERESTING... but not be boring.

Who would have thought this site would pick a porsche and a VW as timeless Rolling Eyes
Here is kind of what I was thinking

Timeless. A bit dated already but it's simple tasteful... That still looks reasonable

Trendy... I don't see that crazy grill holding keeping in fashion...

I'll also add I think entry level cars have more of a license to be fun and crazy in styling. a new fiestas doesn't need to be classy and timeless of course it's neither fun nor classy but I hear great things about the ST. It's kind of mound of pointless generic nothing styling..

Also bear in mind....its not just the concept or shape.....its how its implemented or accomplished.

Example.....everyone bitches about the new beetle.....but the original new beetle was actually a direct rip-off of the silhouette of the W-30....which is THE original beetle.

They had a great starting point....but just could not finish it properly. Too much junk in it.

Talk about timeless.....I just watched Le Mans with Steve McQueen again last night.
The Porsche 917.....is timeless. One of the last models of it still holds the lap record at Le Mans....somewhere north of 230 mph. The shape that started it all (and ended can am racing).

41 years of history for the GSR..... Timeless, or perhaps just trendy twice? Think

I think timeless looking newer cars are ones that give a nod toward their former self - porsche, jaguar, bmw and MB sedans, jeep, land rover, volvo, even new beetles, minis and nissan 370z nod toward their ancestory.

Lexus, Infinit, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, etc. don't have a well established style to nod towards, so they don't look timeless to me.

Also, some manufacturers have abandoned the look of their ancestory - the US manufacturers, Audi & Saab come to mind, so they don't look timeless to me either.

Amen!

Those cars are so far removed from today's gadget-choked monsters. That was one CLEAN design that WORKED!

Trendy twice.

Trendy also

In the 70's VW was quickly losing market share to the Japanese cars, so they came up with a number of "trendy" gimmick trim packages to hold on. They didn't help.

Lots of ways to turn the classic shape of the Beetle into a dated trendy look.

Jeans Bug...? I'd forgotten that VW went for that jeans-are-it fashion also... Then there is the "timeless jeans car"... Not...

Honda makes Acura, Toyota makes Lexus.

They made a "fat chick" new beetle. VW didn't learn from the first time they did this.
