that is the only non-BD walkthrough that I have seen with vents in the cargo area. fourth oldest walkthrough that I know about. I would love for more to turn up and for it to move down the list.
note the firetruck red paint and the safaris. very special bus for a panel to have three big options like that.

To Everett; Hey, we both looked way younger on that picture didn't we? I still had hair! |
I think Lind or Greg Noble took some photos of the documentation and VW letters Bob had for this Bus - maybe they can post them.
Hahaha, I was thinking we looked a lot younger too! |
almost 12 years since I took that photo....
I have a photocopy and good translation of the factory documentation on that bus. I will dig it out, and doublecheck, but I think that Bob posted all of the relevant facts from it. it is an entire extra page that came with the birth certificate from the factory. I have never seen that kind of extra information on any other bus. truly amazing car.

To Lind; No Lind sorry, I still don't want to swap this bus for your house yet.... |
LOL. you know the offer stands.
some more stuff to add to the list:
how could everyone not think of the prototype '55 schoolbus? (discuss amongst yourselves)
I have seen at least 6 PB walkthrough kombis.
three '58 walkthrough standards.
one from eugene oregon -> portland -> KCW ->?
one recently advertized by Kris (65nsquareback)
one that I previously owned. I don't know if it is public where it went, but it is getting some serious love and I am sure it will come out soon.
as much as I like PB walkthroughs, somehow I managed to sell all five that I have owned. 2 singledoor panels, 2 doubledoor panels and one standard. I am sure I will have another '58 walkthrough someday.... _________________ .

Thanks EB for posting pics. I remember it being either '57 or super early production '58.

As Lind mentioned, it is going through a hard core preservation right now. NOS safaris installed last week. Lots of Samba folks involved with this project....

Here's my 58 Kombi I've slowly resurrected and put back together these past 6 years. It's was built in April 1958. Fixed most of the rot, hacks and front end damage it had. Gathering all the loose ends and planning to drive and camp with it much more now that the transmission and engine are trustworthy Also working to remove old respray down to the original dove blue paint. It's very slow moving as the paint is very difficult to remove. I'd like to blend in the Gerson panels to match. Almost ready to install much needed pressed bumpers and a flat decklid (that needs some work) to get this bus looking a bit more complete. Here are a few recent pics and how it looks now:

The ad says he thinks it's a '57 but there is no VIN # listed for me to check. _________________ How to Post Photos

I found this pic in a book. The one the left is a walkthrough barndoor panelvan.
On the right is a different bus - kombi with opening rear hatch:

It's a shame that early walkthrough with the safari's got cut up. I wonder if Easy E could reach out and track down the person who has the walkthrough section and get the body number. There was that blue walkthrough section up for sale that supposedly came from a kombi maybe last year? Would still have the body number as well.
I know we all usually go by VIN #'s, but the body number could help in narrowing down when it was manufactured. It seems as though when people go by body numbers it puts a bus a couple months earlier. I assume they didn't use the buses in order according to body stampings, but it could possibly help narrow down that earlier walkthrough, and ultimately a possible run of early walkthroughs that were done.
example/question-has anyone ever had a bus with a body number higher than the vin?
i.e., my bus-
body number-300890
vin number-326664
I wonder if a bunch of these buses were all done around the same time. Not nec the earlier one with the upper vents, but it seems as though the 15w, easy e's panel, the "super deluxe", my ddwt, etc are all feb 58 buses. I would think it would have been easier for them to bust out a bunch of walkthroughs at one time-while the tooling was set up?...so in theory the body numbers may be really close. (I know Bob's deluxe was altered at the factory, but maybe a lot of these earlier buses were).
I would be interested to see the vin's(at least first 3 numbers), as well as the body numbers from any possible buses being discussed here. This would help in compiling a detailed and organized list of these buses.
This is all speculation on my part, but makes sense to me. Thoughts? |

Also, in the David Eccles Specification Guide it states on page 28...
February 1956-Start of seven-seater bus production.
If this is referring to walkthrough options, you would think more earlier buses would have surfaced by now, unless it took a bit to catch on? |

Was the rest of the bus that wasted that this could not be saved? Looks pretty dry. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |
