Time for another update kids...
5-lug rim PC'd is done, so it's off to the tire shop to pickup some new shoes
Mounted all 4 rims and tires at the casa, popped on the new SS hub caps and the Bug is 100% assembled and ready for the road. I can FINALLY take it out for a "shake down" drive around the the neighborhood! The Bug finally sees daylight again
The BugPack muffler is banging against the rear apron, extremely irritating. Off to my local muffler shop for a some welding to eliminate the noise

It was then off to get a pro alignment and back home to fix a sticky throttle cable.
It's time to put the kids to bed and enjoy some some air-cooled VW porn...

Although it got frustrating at times I am very pleased with the final results. The end result is my vision of a super sanitary mild resto-mod Beetle with a great stance. I learned some lessons along the way and this site was a treasure trove of information during final assembly. The headlight assembly pictorial and door reassembly steps were priceless. Cheers all... _________________ 1957 VW Oval Resto Mod |

Thanks! Sticking to deadline kept me motivated. There were many weekends and evenings when I didn't want to be working on the Bug in my cramped carport! _________________ 1957 VW Oval Resto Mod |

Ditto on what GP said. It should be up with the "builds and projects" at the top of this form. Really well done VWnut! _________________ '63 Vert. Bug - '58 Bug Ragtop RHD - '63 Vert. Bug -

Thanks all for the nice comments. Being a detail oriented type of person helped the project come out as nice as it did. I am VERY pleased with the end result. Working in a confined carport with tight access was a total PITA. I must have jacked up the car to place on jack stands at least a dozen times over the 1.5 year build and I am surprised that I didn't scratch the paint during the reassembly process. A custom tan headliner and big bore dual carb engine are on my wish list:) _________________ 1957 VW Oval Resto Mod |

Thanks again all! Would I have done a few things different? Only a few things, here is my short list;
-My biggest regret on the build is choosing an aftermarket fiberglass hood. What was I thinking? It simply does not fit like the original VW hood. I fiddled with it for hours and the shut lines, particularly at the cowl, don't line up.
-Kept all four of the OG fenders. I went the aftermarket route and the quality just does not measure up the OG fenders. Thin, sharp edges, etc.
-I need to have a custom headliner made (tan color) to cover up the roof section that I sprayed Raptor on.
-Chosen a darker color carpet. Its very light and shows dirt easily.
-Install a peel and stick Dynamat type of product in the engine bay. _________________ 1957 VW Oval Resto Mod |

when you do the headliner are you doing just the roof section or all the way down the sides too. looks like you had the sides painted nice to match. |

That's where the original parking light bulb was (aka "city light", those bulbs are usually clear), this is what people do when they shave the turn signals off the fenders, they make the old parking light bulb the turn signal.
It's an absolute nightmare to distinguish from the headlight bulb when the headlight is on. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"
