|
|
Does a 1980 Rabbit Diesel Pickup have a fuel pump in the tank? I am thinking no. My belief is that the fuel is brought into the engine by the injection pump?
Thanks for responses, |

Also, starts up really hard and there is a tone of white smoke. Only way to keep it running is to keep foot on the gas. It will not idle. I hooked up the fuel system to a similar diesel truck and it ran fine. I ran it through my fuel filter. My though is that if there is no fuel pump that there is an air leak in the fuel line or algae build up in the tank? |

No fuel pump in the tank . The injection pump alone draws the fuel from the tank .
I know black smoke is running rich so (maybe) white is lean ?
If running lean try looking for suction leaks in fuel supply lines . Cracks . loose fittings etc. _________________ Currently own : 1969 Beetle w/ 1600cc, Single Port, Solex 30 PICT 2, Dist. 113 905 205 T, stock exhaust.

Will it run OK after it warms up a little?
If so, it's glow plugs. Even one bad makes for a hard start and LOTS of white smoke. |

Check your timing, white smoke in diesels is usually unburnt fuel from too advanced timing _________________ foam cowboy hats aren't good helmets. |

100% correct! I just re-timed my 82 1.6na pump in my singlecab vanagon (identical to the rabbit setup) and it stopped running rough at first and stopped
all that scary white smoke I had at startup too. First time I used my new timing indicator tool and it made a big difference in power too.
I can now break 46 mph!
turns out it was waaaay off from the PO.
