PostPosted: Mon Oct 13, 2014 1:48 pm    Post subject: VW Engine into Porsche 356A Reply with quote

I need some advice on clutch and throw out bearing combinations so I can fit a VW 6V engine with a 180mm flywheel to a Porsche 356A . The VW engine has a vw clutch and pressure plate with a ring fitted .The transmission is a 644 with a porsche early throw out bearing without a collar.
I have installed this set up into the car but cannot get any gears but with engine off I can select gears. Do I need to use a VW throw out bearing in the porsche transmission to make it work with the VW clutch? or do i need another combination of clutch /throw out bearing ? Appreciate any advice . Thanks.[/b]

A clearer explanation of "cannot get any gears" would help.

With the engine running and the clutch pedal down I cannot select any gears . When I try to select a gear I hear a grinding noise and the gears do not engage .

The clutch parts sound compatible. Did you adjust the clutch?

Are you referring to the clutch arm on the transmission ? I adjusted this before I installed the engine . Does it require further adjustment after the engine is installed ?

Yeah, check the adjustment at the arm again. How does the clutch feel? You want about 2" of play at the petal. The 180mm VW clutch and Porsche are the same. But the Porsche diaphragm pressure plates are nicer to have. As I recall the 356's have a stud at the petal end of the clutch cable that can also be adjusted, but the adjustment's do the same thing.

I have checked with a the clutch arm with a friend and it goes all the way back when the clutch pedal is operated. I'm assuming if the clutch cable was frayed it would not pull the clutch arm all the way back.

Do you know how to adjust a clutch? Did the clutch on the VW engine work the last time it was used on a different car?

I have taken the engine out to have an inspection of the clutch and throw out bearing and everything seems fine . I have attached some pics can
someone confirm if this is the right combination of clutch and throw out bearing ??
