I've got a 73 Square. Looking for some inspiration on interiors. Show me what you got!

Also, if anyone can show me pics of what the completed 73 interior originally looked like, that would be awesome. Mine has some funky!

Being your 1973 Squareback is Sahara Beige your original interior would be Black. The Archives section has 1973 Type 3 brochures with the original interior examples.

Mine's a bit spartan at the moment, but I did get the back seat in it finally. Wink Door panels are in the planning and parts/material acquisition stage and will NOT be even close to stock. . . Laughing

I like that A LOT. That's is something I would like to produce, but unfortunately the purist wouldn't have it. Confused

Thanks for the kind comments. I loved these seats ever since the new Scirocco came out, was determined to get some and fit them. took a while to fit properly but happy how they came out.

TMI products, these are your door panels (and sun visors), I had them special ordered here in the UK. Very nice quality Wink and match well !

Can you see the dash top ? been 'flocked' looks great and covered the speaker grill and the usual cracks

Just talked to my R&D guy, I think we are going to look more into something like your back seat Angelo(mainly because I want one Very Happy ). We will also look into a VW only specific sport seat with factory mounts but bolstering and reclinable. I feel there is going to be a shift in VW soon and thing will slowly go back to being custom again. This is our sport seat in brick red/mesh red, but its a little too "nice" for a vw.

those seats are lovely, new seats sounds like a plan though !!

I live in hope of 'custom' coming around again, much more imagination required instead of another 'resto' looker Rolling Eyes

These were the hardest seats to fit in my fastback, and I've been through quite a few sets !!

They fronts are on the new generation VW runners which are flat but quite wide. just fitted the fasty floorpans, would not fit a bug for sure.

rears took some headscratching, they had isofix too which got the chop and the squab was shortened a little just on the foam. I also had the complication of retrofitting these seats where I had fitted some brackets for the corrado ones, so bit of a hybrid !!

The Corrado seats were heavy with all steel backings, thinking the Scirocco ones would be heavier but turned out the be very light !! they use blow moulded plastic for the back rests now !!

Sometimes I wonder about the period-custom look. Doing an interior that pays homage to the era of manufacture but is in all respects a complete custom.
I always tend to go in circles thinking I'd do something inspired by a Porsche 912 or early 911. Perhaps an Alfa or a Citrioen or Mercedes Saloon but then I see a pristine vw interior re-manufactured to exact specs or as close as you can get and I start thinking that I'd be equally happy with that result and it would not suffer the fate of so many custom jobs where you'll undoubtedly hear yourself saying down the track - "It seemed cool at the time".
Currently I'm liking the Alfa GT 1975 (below) as inspiration but I still have a big soft spot for houndstooth and check patterns. Since my Aussie spec vinyl pattern is NLA I guess anything is going to be custom unless I choose to use the old seat covers. I guess I'll just keep circling for the time being.

BTW: Don't get the idea that I'm against custom cars cause I'm not. If anything I'm against bad styling or lack of design synergy. It could be something as small as putting a Chev badge on a Holden (that's a local 'bogan' thing that happens in Aus) just because they use a Chev based motor or stickerizing everything with brands you don't even follow. Same goes for interiors, do a quality job and don't ignore that its a 50 year old car. I'm sure there's a tonne of Honda seats out there in wrecker-land with vw Beetle runners on them.

Borrowed pic from Classic throttle shop in Sydney. They sell some mint classics.

There's also the conundrum of the early low-backs being dangerous.
Headrests were a big safety improvement, right up there next to seat belts.
AFAIK, shoulder belts are of little use without headrests.

Never really cared for the later factory high-backs myself, at least the looks of them.

Those 356 add-on headrests would look right added to the Type 3 low-backs, though. Even if they don't really provide much in the way of safety...

It's like you're inside my head man. Since I have good original seat covers I'm probably gonna put them away in safe storage and I think I might brighten up the interior scheme a little.

Gave up looking for early 911 seats. They were either broken or too expensive or both. I bought 944 seats but sold them because although they looked comfy I just couldn't get used to the large difference in styling. Duran Duran kept oozing out of them every time I looked at them.
I did however collect a set of those 356 barrel style add-on headrests and only just managed to buy an old set of the clamps that screw in the back of the seat. Will be doing exactly that setup on original type 3 frames with teak coloured seats like my original seats and most likely a houndstooth style insert but gonna keep the exact material pattern a secret. It's not been used on a car yet and compliments my paint colour well.

Early Porsche seats are no better. In many ways they are worse don't waste your money.
