I just traded for this rail. I have always wanted one, but I would like to know more about it. I'm new to VW and to rails so just posting some pictures maybe you guy can tell. I did find out the engine according to the number is a 1500/1600, and it is a single port. It is titled as a 1966 Volkswagen deluxe. I am probably losing the spoiler and definitely redoing the mud flaps. I am also probably going to plastidip the body in satin black to protect the red paint and also to temporarily cover it up. (I don't care for red much,

this spring I figure I will hit some swap meets and see what I can find. Looking for seats, exhaust, dual carbs, wheels, builder engine, etc.....

Also I found a rebuilt Subaru ea82 engine with carb intake and fuel injected intake for $50 here locally guy built it for his plane and then was told it wasn't approved for an airplane. I may go that route later but these air cooled engine are kind of fun to tinker with. the extra 50 hp would be great.

The frame MAY be an older Chenowth, from California. If it is, the back has been modified and the front fiberglass is Berrien.

How and where are you planning to use the Buggy? The tires say the PO used it almost exclusively on pavement.

"Antlers" is not a familiar place name to me.
US?
Canada?
Inside joke?

The mudflaps may be required by the local vehicle regulations.

The gas tank looks interesting. Unusual shape for certain.

The engine is PROBABLY a 1600 now regardless what it started out as. It's over 40 years old and it's definitely been rebuilt. 1600 pistons and cylinders fit in the same as 1500s. Since the 70s, have been more readily available and and usually cost the same or less than 1500 replacements. So most folks would rebuild it as a 1600 for more hp and the same fuel economy for free.

Sorry on the town. It's Antlers, OK which is se Oklahoma. I'm going to do some light trails and off-road some here in the hills (mostly forest) but mostly street. Yes the mud flaps are required in Oklahoma by law if you don't have fenders. This winter I'm turning them to something a little more acceptable.

Thank you to all that have replied. The 952 Berrien looks like it fits the bill perfect for this one.

The transparent roof is prerty cool, and should make seeing traffic lights a whole lot easier then a metal roof does with that chassis design ! Seeing lights in my rail ( I have a chenowth with very similar design to yours) is a real pain with the metal roof on it...I might have to borrow from that idea. The dashboard is pretty cool looking too. Hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like its wood? Whoever did it did a nice job.

Similar to Chenowth and pretty much an imitation, like the frame it's wrapped around. But not quite the same. Here is Larry's (uh60ce) Chenowth for comparison:

Well Cocpuffs, you just might be correct.

Your hood and jcchappy's have a recess down the center. Larry's has a ridge down the center. I'm familiar with Chenowth hoods with the ridge down the center and the only hoods I had seen before which had a recess were ID'd to me as Berrien. Those hoods may have been Chenowth on Berrien frames. I don't know for sure.

But again, you might be right.

Chenowth 2RL. Interresting about the serial number though, I had no idea how they worked them. What would a serial number of 1522 translate to mean then?

Nice buggy! but im not to sure on the vin, mine was 2379
(23rd buggy made in 1979) but your vin is different i wish i knew more about chenowth's maybe lynn chenowth (owner) could go on jay lenos garage with some of his buggies like the FAV's, the 2lw, 4lw etc because he has set alot of records in the baja racing world with his buggies. i will try to get a picture of my chenowth vin tmrw, but is yours behind the drivers seat with chenowth signiture on the top right of the vin/model plate?

It's actually on the passenger side of the window opening on the cross tube that the steering wheel mounts to on mine , but otherwise as described. Sorry if I hijacked your thread.
